Very well executed, a bit dry in some places, but the skate tricks were bang on! Good use of silence.. 4*'s for originality

What type of animation tool did you use for this?

I watched this without sound (if there was any), so this is a review from a skater - without sound:

Your style is sick, your animations were fluid...and sick, the skateboarding was sick, and overall the whole presentation was sick. I was into the little short the whole time, and you told the story well.

The grind along the rail was awesome and the 360 flip over the cat was great.

I would definately watch this if it were some kind of little mini-series about this kid.

Where can i see more? =p

hey.. i know i haven't wrote on this post for a while, but ive been very very buisey.........
Thanks to all who complimented my work and thanks to ragdoll and Essex with the suggestions to send the peace to Adult swim........ The feedback is truly truly appriciated.... I hope to post some more stuff soon. Perhaps artwork of mine..

Im havin Trouble uploading the images from my film, so i don't know if they will appear.. I just recently edited my first post on this thread.. so i don't know why the images aren't showing but i hope the problem will magically fix itself. but as a last resort you could always click the link.

Apeman i don't got a website.. but hopefully a blog soon. followed by a real website:)

to answer a lot of questions regarding the film. including neiy0 and DonaldKasper Questions.
This film was all hand drawn.. painted in photoshop, brought together in after effects. and composited in maya.. took me about 5 months to produce the final peace..(not including storyboarding)

Just to point out the drumming was done by my good bud Brandon Robins who's drumming just blows me away.. Thruthfully, he pulled the drum track out of his *ss in like 3 days... He is a trully Talented Drumer...

And i wanna give shout outs to Anxskater Streen and casesensative just for being skaters:)

Thanks again.. hope to chat with you guys soon

hey I agree with every compliment that's been said here so far, it really made me smile

the best thing about this piece is just how down to earth it is... the kid's obviously a talented skater but there's nothing fantastic about the story... it's just a kid who stumbles into a bit of trouble... he falls, runs out of breath, and really appeals to the audience as an ordinary human character who barely pulls himself out of a little adventure

to make something like that so entertaining is a great accomplishment when most CG is so focused on things that are out of this world

Really cool man,
In some respects it slightly reminded me of some of the animation shorts in "The Animatrix" but with a style unique all its own. It would have been interesting if a little more drama and dynamics were added to the final Jump across the buidling and then perhaps a resolution as an ending ie; the kid laying on the ground after the fall from his jump looks up and sees another cop staring overhead at him and the kid just kind of smiles nervously. Really fun though - nice job

Very, very cool.

As has been said, I like the fact that this story is down to earth. The fact that there aren't spaceships whizzing around or princess-warriors slaying demons forces the viewer to focus on the fantastic animation without worrying so much about the content. It works beautifully.

Rock on.

That was really cool! Enjoyed it quite a bit. Good to see traditional animation is still going strong. I'm working on a piece myself right now. The only thing that bugged me from a- seemingly- technical point of view is some weird Antialiasing artifacts around the edges of some of the buildings... Did anyone else notice those? Probably some conflict with resolution and/or resizing or something...
Regardless, great job and kudos for the soundtrack too!

Nice work Jay -- did you work on Carl Squared for Pip Animation?

I did see this before; someone showed me the 2005 Sheridan student demo reel, this past summer, and, to me, this was one of the films that stuck out above the rest.

I think the cool visual style is what first makes this piece stand out, followed by good use of visual story telling, and dynamic timing; which works well. I love the little build of anticipation when he is confronted by the cop on the roof, and then the slow-mo money shot when he is flying threw the air.

I watched if a few times and If I had a critique, and this is nit-picky at best, it would be that the initial impact when he hits the pipe, before he hits the ground, could be a hair stronger, faster, perhaps even taking out a few frames, between when he hears the car alarm and hits the pipe, but as I say that is being really nit-picky.

Well done :), it’ll be a good piece for your demo reel. Keep up the good work.

Cavematty
11-29-2005, 01:03 PM
Awesome and outstanding piece mate. You should be proud of this one. Love it. Ill watch it over and over, and when my mates are over for a few beers ill show it to them it's that cool. I do 3D animation but have done a little 2D. I cant wait to see how your 3D work goes. I dont think you should be so worried about the fur for your rabbit. Its all about storytelling and animation. Your pacing etc is already great.
Please, please PLEASE dont fall into the 3D CG trap of getting caught up and lost in the tools and tricks and photorealism etc. Treat it as a means to an end not the end. Cos you already have so much of what u need to learn down pretty well.
ah well thats my 2 cents.

that was awesome i love the skateboard physics you put into it in combo with the dry sound made by perfectly landed tricks

edit: i did notice one odd thing: when approaching the cat he rides forward but the trick he does over the cat is performed fakie (i guess a fakie 180 kickflip), so riding with the body 180 degrees turned, how did he changed foot postition so quickly?

Very well done! I like the organic hand-drawn style and the loose shapes of the objects. Also you did a very good cutting job, the simple shots string perfectly to form a story.

Only two critics:
1. I wonder about the bright outlines of the characters. It somehow looks a bit too 'layered', the characters don't become one with the background.

2. The movie's too short ;-)

Greetings,
Jack

Hi Jay,

great work ! :bowdown:Love the style ... Just one question though, as I am a bit puzzled: How did you manage to get the animation right with just using Photoshop and AfterEffects? I would guess that this is a bit of an akward workflow compared to using dedicated 2D animation apps (like PlasticAnimationPaper, Mirage, theTab, Flash, ToonBoom, moho etc.). I'm currently also exploring 2D animation (got a bit bored by 3D ...), so any insight on this would be helpful.

Soundtrack was great too... never underestimate the power of music to tell a story!

Wicked short! There definitely needs to be more animation about skating. One tiny crit - when he ollies up to grind the bench, it looks like he's rotating to do a lipslide but then it cuts to him k-grinding. But yeah, other than that, excellent stuff!

I like the animation style. It syncs well with the models and lighting. Its closer to Anime. Beauty :D

It was a great animation. But the thing I enjoyed most was the sound the skateboard made. That sound instantly took me back to my childhood doing ollies. And when those wheels hit the ground with a clank, it was like I was there. Great use of sound effects, as well as animation.
