Is there a chance that your camera is NTSC and his is PAL?
NTSC is 720x480 at 29.97 fps
PAL is 720x576 at 25 fps
They don't like each other.

You'll have to get a hold of a PAL camcorder or VTR to copy the file correctly to your hard drive.
