View Full Version : UV mapping link?
wh0seline 11-08-2005, 01:41 AM First let me say, I'm sorry to everyone who exhalts the search option, I truly looked for a good tutorial on how to UV map. I know how to model decently, and then I want to say I add the modifier UVW unwrap? I'm honestly not sure, so if its possible could anyone send me a link to a good tutorial, i looked at the one in Max, but I was puzzled on how to accually get my model into a convenient format so i can use photoshop. If I accually DO render the texture, its in tiny triangles that I cannot identify. I'm sure there is a simple explination, but please if you have any reference or link on how to learn the basics of UV mapping, I would be extremly gratefull.
-thanks

It does depend on the situation, but I typically find it easiest to use the mesh-select + uvw-map modifier combo for each portion of the mesh that I want to project differently, and then put a mesh-select-all + unwrap-uvw on the top of it all

Depends on what Max you have. Of course Max 8 kicks ass for mapping, but for earlier versions, check out Ben Mathis at http://www.poopinmymouth.com (I love typing that out haha) Hit the tutorials, watch the two UV mapping vids.

hi
this huge tutorial (http://67.15.36.49/ffa/tutorials/max/joanofarc/joanmenu.asp) has got a section for uv mapping of a detailed character, first 2 uv mapping intro lessons, then uv mapping a complete character including cloths and accesories which will make you want no more

Sorry hadn't had alot of time to perfect the UV mapping, b/c of alot of classes. I think i can get to the point where i export it, the only problem is when i do export, the image is dark, and on top of that, once i get it through photoshop, im not quite 100% on puttin it back on, some of the tutorials left me at exporting, but were fantastic up until that point :D.
cheers

Get texporter, it's a usefull little tool to export your UV layout into a bitmap.
Once you have your UV-layout bitmap, use it as a map for instance in diffuse and start painting on it in PS or smth similiar, you will see what happens - it's not that hard and it doesn't hurt.

Thanks Scrim. I went ahead and picked that up, ill give it a go.
Just out of curiousity, how would i go about finding a tutorial for what I would call a Metal Glare. I saw it alot in Episode three and i see it from time to time in other 3d works, its when the light hits metal and it releases a high intensity glare.
To help show what I'm talking about, this is a screen shot from Star Wars Episode III

If you notice the top of the ship, it seems to have that nice glare on it. You understand? Is that difficult to do? And what should i search for on doing such a thing?
Thanks alot-

It's called Bloom afaik and it's very easy to do this in PS,After Effects or whatever, even in Max itself by using a glow. I prefer to do stuff like that in PS or AE. You can find a tutorial for this on http://www.intrinsia.net/

there must be a way to do it in 3dmax, i have seen the effect all too often in games, which render in real time.

Well, that bloom you see in games is defiately not done in max. It's the game engine.. it's about pixelshaders and whatnot.
As already mentioned, yes, you can achieve this in max but it's more convenient to do it in post (faster, more control). I don't know how it works with other renderers but with MR you have a glare output shader (I think it's one of those hidden ones.. for more information check the MR shader discussion thread).
You can also achieve a cheap glow effect within videopost inside max.. but it's rarely any good for this..

cool deal, i will do in post then if it is faster and has more artistic control. Thanks a lot Rockin.
