View Full Version : help! sorta... newbie here! whoopee!
themike 11-18-2002, 04:08 AM Hi, I'm a newbie at this forum and any kind of CG! THis is my first project for my arch class and I was wondering what problem I'm having. I'm dealing with tiled roof for my structure and I made every single tiles *copy instances* and made it into a roof. Now I love how it turned out, but it just took me forever to work on it... thus having me put on the roof at last. Anyway, am I doing something wrong? is my computer just slow? (athlon XP 1.6mhz, 514megs, ati all in wonder radeon) Thanks guys, I hope to browse this forum starting now... seeing how I want to divert my career into this field.... PS... do CG artist get paid a lot? Cheers!

Use the array tool.

As I found out by modeling spaceship with lots of turrets, that when you attach your objects to one big, you will have much faster performance. Lots of objects = lower performance. Also check the size of your texture. It could be too big.
Hope that helps.

aahhh... I see what he was asking now... oops.
Jones_Stork: What if you need to animate the turrets? can you do sub-object animations of that sort of complexity?

If it's becoming slow, just select your tiles, right click, go to properties and check the "Display as box" button. Speeds it all up.

hmmm thanks guys... haha yea i'm glad instance... cuz I've been fiddling with the array tool... and a bit perplexed.... saying... man... this is still slow... what's happening here... :scream: Anyway, yea... it's still a bit chunky when i group them together... is there no other way?

Do you need to see them all? Otherwise, just hide them!:D

well, I sorta need to work on the roof, to make sure it fits, add more decoration and all. Should I just work on it separately then instead?

The more you add, the slower it will get, so it's better to work on the scene in visible chunks. If you are using max 5, use the layers tools to break your scene up. Generally I hide/unhide as I work.

doh... still working with 3dsmax 4... ugh anyway... that "turn into squares" mode did some good, so I'm gonna stick with that... and hide the rest as I'm working with the roof... thanks for the fast reply!
