View Full Version : Paint Bucket Fill: A simple but helpful tool
stuh505 11-07-2005, 12:32 AM I have noticed that it can be a real pain to select the correct faces sometimes, especially when dealing with a complex object that may have lots of other faces behind the front faces. Ignore back face selection doesn't ignore back faces unless the normals are pointing away! Other times, the way that you want to define your selection is not easily done...for instance, if you just want to select a loop, and then have everything on one side of the loop be selected.

Now you can take advantage of the new point-to-point seam feature to easily make selections on those more complicated objects.
New - also allows you to easily convert selection to and from any sub object level!
Example 2 (version 3):

Hope it helps

Glad you like it :)
It should work on edit mesh or edit poly.
If you guys notice any bugs or suggestions I'll put them in

great! ..nice little one, but i guess its still faster using the paint selection for faces etc.
But - Its cool ;)
Can you do it for Edge selection?
just activate the edge-to-edge selection, click the edges you would like to select, right click to finish

Nice one stuh505. I was wondering if the point to point edge selection would be accessible to other parts of Max than the unwrapper.
The advantage of this over paint select is that it would be easier to select things that are obscured by other geometry, paint select will select everything that faces the view through the entire model which isn't that useful in dense overlapping models. This way so long as you can find one face to click on in the selected area you should be fine.
I agree that it would be handy to select edges with it too.

The script is very cool. But in your specific example, you could have just turned on "By Angle" and selected the same faces with just a few clicks.

Updated version is linked to.

I took this a step further. Now you can easily convert any selection of edges / verts / faces to edges / verts / faces, works for both edit mesh and edit poly.
So, just use the tool to select faces, then convert to edges or verts, whatever you like.
I specifically programmed it so that the selection does not "grow" when you convert back and forth between verts and faces, etc.

Sure, but this is much more versatile.

It's not :( And in fact, the edges that you select with it (although accessible by max script) cannot be used because they use a completely different and unknown indexing system! It was a real pain figuring out how to make this possible

Cleaned up the code a little and gave it a sleeker UI, is the button icon working for you guys? It's working sporadically for me

Well, maybe I'm a little confused, but what codec did you encode your examples in, I can't seen to get them to play.

Nope, it is based off of features that were introduced in Max 8.
