Hello all, I have a quick question. I am creating a reflective, metallic material and am using a ramp. I read up on it a bit and found that to use it properly I need to use a samplerinfo node and connect the facing ration to the vcoord of the ramp.

I know what the samplerinfo node is supposed to do, and I can find the facing ratio, but when I try to connect the ramp (even in the conenction editor) I can't seem to figure out how to select its vcoord. Can anyone help me with this matter? Thanks.

k there we go!

Middle mouse drag the sampler info node to the ramp node's Uv Coord attribute. Make sure you connect to this and not the actual 2d placement node. The output connectino should be "facing ratio" and the input should be "v coord". Your ramp needs to be a v ramp if you connect to the v coord. Likewise, if you have a u ramp, you connect to the u coord instead.

Thanks for the quick response FrizzleFry0. I tried what you suggested but I always run into a few problems. When I select the sampler info node, there is a facing ratio option I can select. I do this and drag it to the ramp. An option box pops up but there is no UV Coord option to connect to.

If I drag it on to the ramp node and open the connection editor, no selectable attributes appear (only a few dimmed non-selectable ones).

Any idea why this would occur? Also, I'm using Maya 6 (I dont know if that matters). Thanks.

Are you dragging the sampler info just onto the ramp shader? Or are you dragging it on the ramp's UV Coord attribute? Open up the ramp shader's attributes and scroll down to "UV Coordinates", then open that up and you should see something that says Uv Coord and has 2 boxes with 0 values in them. You want to middle mouse drag the facing ratio node onto where it says Uv Coord. It should then open up the connection editor, and then you choose facing ratio for the output and find V coord for the input.

Thanks again for the quick reply. I was dragging the sampler info node onto the shader itself and not on the attributes. I didnt even think of that. Although when I tried it, a connection editor pops up and the same thing happens...

under the output it says:
samplerinfo1
Message (in italics)

This is all that is under the readable area

under inputs it says:

ramp1

Message (in italics again)

And under show inputs, UVCoord and
UV Filter Size are dimmed out.

Any idea? I like your suggestions and I feel they're helping...Thanks again.

If UV Coord is grayed out, that's because it's 2 values (U and V) and your output (facing ratio) is only 1 number. Click the little plus next to UVCoord and it opens up to list U and V separately, and they won't be grayed out.

Hey Jeremy, I did try clicking the plus sign, but nothing showed up. And as for the facing ratio, it doesnt pop up either. Any idea how to bring up the facing ratio in the connection editor? Thanks.

Hey dude, do you know if you could get a copy of Maya 7 or um maybe I could look at the scene you got. If you can, email the file to me - thurazor@gmail.com

Just do as much as you can with the facing ratio and I'll see if there's anything weird going on.
