View Full Version : Devil and Dragon

I recently came up with this character idea to explain the weapon of my dragonman. Who wields a hammer like staff wich is supposed to be this demon guy's severed and "possessed" hand. Hes still kind of low on detail compared to my reference drawings. And I still havent figured out a good texture scheme yet.

Heres a link to some quick dynamic animation tests of the dragon guy.

Hey - looking good Threedeemer! The texturing you have so far is looking pretty cool. I would suggest you do a UV Unwrap (cylindrical on the Y axis - works best for heads), so that you can get small individual details onto the face. The glowing eyes are a nice touch. I also think that the horns should have a very different look (texture-wise) to the rest of the head. But that';;s just my opinion. ;)
He looks really evil!!
What software are you using????

Hi Leigh! Thanks for the advice, I'll definately change the horns like you suggested. I always have problems with uvs. What I did in this case was use "automatic mapping" in Maya, but its very inefficient with its waste of texture space. Although I did most of the modeling in Maya 3 I started out with splines in 3ds max. thanks again for your response

Here is a rough drawing showing the possessed hand weapon idea. I was planning on adding a bone setup to the hand so it could grab and slap etc. The demon would have to be larger in comparison to the dragonman.

Hey man, it's looking cooler and cooler. The hand kinda reminds me of Bruce Campbells hand that he made in Army Of Darkness. Groovy. I checked out your 2 clips there of the demon - awesome work!!! That demon is really really really cool!!!! NOw I want to see him with the weapon!

very nice work. i like the animations and movements. He only spins around his axis instead of stepping, or is he so heavy that he can't lift his feet high? Also like the grabbing hands when he jumps!

hey, i like it, fine model, why don t you add the last details in displacement?

GREAT, GREAT profile of the beast, SUPERBE, I love it, but frontal isn't that good.To make the dude looks better, I'd make his CHIN wider and the JAW as well.

looks really cool.
i'm not sure if the anims were done just for testing, or if you want crits on them, so i'l crit them anyway. feel free to ignore :P
01-really nice, but his left foot really bothers me... it should be stationary much longer. if it were a smaller swing, it would bring the right foot around, keeping the left one planted, shift weight, then lift up the left foot enough to replace it into a more comfortable position... with this swing, i think the left foot should be still until that leg twists a bit, and then it'll slide quickly into position.
02-nice sense of weight. can be exaggerated more by having him bend more when he lands. also, he moves a bit symetrically. a lot of times (and it'll look more dynamic), we push off favoring one leg over the other, so that leg will leave the ground a little later then the other. and that will affect the arms, too (the arm on the side of the puching-off foot should streatch out a bit more and higher)
really looks good, though. keep up the good work.

Thanks everyone, you all are giving me some great advice, Im motivated to try and finish this character. I'll give the displacement idea a try, hopefully my 3D card can handle it. For the animation I'll keep those points in mind I've done alot of 2d animation and understand some of the points I missed, I have to figure out how to apply "Overlapping Action" in 3D form. As for the jaw It actually started out very wide and I thinned it out, It gave him less of a strongman look. The chin I agree with. You all have been very helpful.
Heres a wire cage, still kinda low poly at the moment.

That really is cool, but I would agree about having the horns a different color.
It makes me want to go and work on some of my stuff in Maya right now but it's 12:05, and high school stinks.. I've had no time to do 3D recently... :(
Anyway, I certainly look forward to seeing more of your work!

your dude is really freaky - think he'll look even more hardcore with very fine strands of white hair sparsely laid out across his nogg'n.
im thinking of something like the crypt keeper or the creeper from jeepers creepers.
hope he has batlike, clawy hands to. very skeletal !

Hi again! I have a brief update. I had little to time to focus on the demon, wasted 2 days unsuccsessfully trying to quickly learn cloth dynamics and hair creation for this character. You will notice in the renders I have also reduced the muzzling of his face.

Heres a pose for his adversary.

WOW!!! Freakin sweet Threedeemer. I love the green guy. The veins look cool. The hands are really nice. Maybe put a fleshy tone on the front part of the torso and fade that to green. It would make it look really nice. Great work again. Keep us posted.

Thanks for the compliment 3Dflasher, I will boost the contrast on the dragons chest area, I guess it is too subtle as is.
And Poseidon, I would be glad to help you out, maybe we could share some techniques since there are some key things I havent figured out with 3D yet; I mostly use Maya and 3ds Max. I'll send you an e-mail tommorrow, gotta get some rest.
