Hey I've been working on making foliage for a map I'm making for an hl2 mod. Anyways this is as far as I've gotten. My main concern is the foliage, it seems to planar. I've looked at the oblivion plants and they seems to be a bunch of sprites repeated or something..

oh well I'm rambling, does anyone have any suggestions?

thanks in advance :)

The trunk of the tree looks pretty cool. That said, the texture on the leaves/needles or whatever looks awful, I would suggest refining it alot, or making a new one altogether. I also think you need to up the density of the leaves/needles , and model them in some better shapes, to hide their 2 dimensionality (don't fold them sharply)

Doesn't it help setting the leaves to 100% self illuminated to stop the wierd shading on the planes...?

definately, I just redid the geometry for the leaves, but havent changed the texture yet..

also did a fancy render (nevermind the other stuff in there, I'm only concerned with the trees)

but, do you find the foliage to be much better at all (despite the fact I havent changed the leaf texture yet..)]

EDIT: I should also mention that the bark texture is not in place yet, it's jsut a stretched noise map..

that is really good, before I saw the plane I though it was a reference of a real shot

good one there

For the leaf texture... i would recommend refining the edges. I find it looks better to have slghtly darker edges than to have lighter edges. Also, i would recomend overlaying a slight(experiment with layer opacity) gradient that goes from dark to light (dark starting where the leaf touches the tree, not just black and white.. try dark blue to yellow or orange)

hmm, I never though of doing anything like that, I'll try that as soon as I get home:) thanks very much for you suggestions :)

also as for speedtree, and easy nat etc... I dont like those programs because they seem so pre-manufactured and you can't get a lot of character out of pocedurally generated trees, thanks anyways

EDIT: also I noticed from looking at it a while, the branches are too thick where they branch off, I'll fix that too
