View Full Version : How they make such realistic models?

In movies like Advent Children, and some of the newer games coming out, the CG flicks are just incredible. What makes the character and the scenes looks so detailed? Is it some trick in modelling, or skin texturing, or something else entirely?

great modelling, great texturing, great shading and great lighting are all as important as each other. if one of these elements looks bad then the whole thing will look bad.

imho, no tricks (short cuts) skill and experience plus greater computing power/more efficient programs. The ability to make detialed meshes with incredibly large textures and discplacements have been around forever in a rendered still format, animation/realtime just have not been practical or responsive enough for this 'new' level of detial

I was lucky enough to get a look at some of the wireframes / untextured models for the Final Fantasy movie that released a few years ago. Besides that the meshes were just really clean, there wasn't that much detail modeled in as I would have expected. Awesome displacement and bumpmaps really can bring characters to live. All you need besides that is just a kickass texture and lighting department. A big ass renderfarm and a load of cash and you're ready to rock and roll!

The modeling is always top quality but its the textures that add so much. I read that some of the shaders used in Final Fantasy were over 5GB

I saw a really good doco recently on modelling and how it is progressing movies etc.

I'm not too experinced wit this shading thing. How exaclty does it work, and wow, 5 g? How does it get so big?

To Tipsee: Do you have the name of this documentary? I would love to see it.
