View Full Version : Textures too sharp and noisy?
plaguelord 11-05-2005, 04:30 PM Hi all, maybe knows one or two tricks about this, usually the textures of my renders look very noisy and sharp, (obviously I use sharp filter on PS, not always) because I hate washed textures or blurred appearance. I want to know if some "in between", not to sharp, not to blurred. Maybe is my render AA filter (I use mitchel-netravalli or catmull-room), I don’t like area or soften at all.
Any tips or helps welcome!

thanks in advance!

Cool scene.
Try adjusting the AA settings, filter size, etc. Compare settings via the RAM Player, since you can scrub between two images easily.
Also I would say you should try to avoid the sharpen filter in PS, it always creates artifacts. If you must, sharpen the render output itself, not the textures you input.

A good AA filter for that kind of inbetween soft and hard look is the Gaussian filter, assuming your package/renderer has one.

I'm stating the obvious here, but your textures look noisy and sharp because they are noisy and sharp. Try to focus a bit less on the small details (grainy patterns) and more on the bigger gradients in the image. You can make a plaster texture like this:

Or you can make a texture like this:

The trick is to find the right balance. You focus a bit too much on the small detail, and forget the larger patterns.
Also you can try to avoid using pure black (for example in the rooftiles) as it looks a bit unnatural.

thanks a lot for the feedback! It really help me.
Marcel thanks for taking the time of post the picture, I understand your point!
I use 3dmax and vray so I dont have Gaussian Filter, any other recomendations? Now I re-rendered with catmull-room, looks a little softer now.

Enabling default super sampling solves that problem for me.
Good luck,
