I tried to merge instead of opening and it worked. But what are the consequences of using "Merge" instead of "Open"?
help!

Sounds a lot like the kind of error that you get when you try to load a Max file with a version of max older than that that the file was created in. I may be wrong though.

hmm... in not sure what's causing the error, I could recall generally using that scene for a character rigged in biped... but instead i deleted the biped and other stuff, and left only the pflow setup and a teapot as a volunteer... I forgot to remove Ops like Camera Mblur and collision tests as they are not really required...
(ok, I had a look at the file again) I cant seem to find any object related to Biped... but anyway, it also seems that my method back then wasnt very optimal and production friendly... probably because... I used a LOT of PFlow emitters, and its very slow in to render. (but the effect is much better with lots of particles...)
I re-did it a bit, here's a file with a somewhat similar and optimized effect. It now only has a single Pflow Emitter, and one Event.

MAX6 - bamf.zip - 16KB (http://www.geocities.com/jeffdavidlim/files/pflow/bamf.zip)
hope this helps!
