I've created a basic family set for my characters. Using primarily ramp shaders on all the furniture and wall. The floor is a ramp shader with a bump map.

What would be a good way to have some cast shadows on the walls & floors?

Well, guess you could use the normal lights, i mean, just lit the scene as you would do if it was a normal render, the difference its in the shaders you are using, which will give the toon aspect. Also if you are using Maya 7, check the toon feature which is really cool .
Here is a simple test i did, its an exterior scene, so im using a direct light to cast the shadows, raytraced shadows.
