This is a character from my upcoming short film. His name is Thokolosi and he's an evil imp that is basically a reanimated corpse that has been magically brought back to life and shrunk down to about a foot tall. Once summoned, they must obey the orders of the person that summoned them. People use them to do bad things to each other or even to kill each other. They can become invisible to adults by swallowing a magic pebble. They have sharp claws on their hands that they use to kill or injure and they are known for being very mischievous, sometimes stealing children out of their beds at night so they can play with them. They never harm children and have been known to protect children from danger with their lives. Children can see them even when they become invisible to adults. Due to their small size, people usually put their beds up on bricks so that Thokolosi can't reach them while they are sleeping.

Modeled in Maya 7 with polygons.

so I started on one of the other characters in my film, the grandmother. She's still in the early stages so detail on her is light at the moment. A lot of detail like her wrinkles will be done in ZBrush and normal mapped onto the mesh for faster rendering. UV mapping will be done in Max 8 so I can utilize the sweet pelt mapping feature.

Update:
One of the characters in the film will be riding a motorcycle when he goes to see a witchdoctor. When deciding on what kind of bike he should ride, I wanted something that wasn't at all flashy or stylish but more practical. The characters are not rich so I wanted a motocycle that would reflect that. After looking on Google, I found the 1979 Suzuki A100 which was perfect for my purposes so I decided on that. Keep in mind that my model is only loosely based on the A100 and I did change some things so it's not going to be accurate. The tread on the tires is modeled only because there will be a couple of closeups where there tire will be quite close to the camera. The bike will be fully rigged and all the cables will move dynamically and the wheels will be rigged to turn automatically with translation of the motorcycle although I will be able to turn that off if I don't want to use it. All the suspension will be rigged for more realistic motion.
At this point the bike modeling is about 75% done so there is still a bit of work to do. In terms of detail, I'm not making it too detailed because I want to keep render times as low as possible and also keep the bike manageable during animation and also since the bike is a very minor part of the story, I'm not going to spend too much time on it. As usual, C&C are always welcome.

Update on Thabo. He is going to have cloth simulated clothes which is why he is modeled naked. His body is not detailed very much because it's not going to be seen under the clothes. As I said before, he's chubby and unattractive. I'm also going to model him with a finger missing on one hand and this will help the story of the film.

I can't say "raise the nose" or "eyes are too big" since it is pretty much stylized.

Isnt really something new that people dont post, is it?
Great work on the first creature and grammy... but the guy with the hat seems a bit deformed
around the hips and at the top of the ass. Face is quite good.
The lower parts of the legs ( cant remember the word..) look also to thin.
keep up the work

Hey Dude

Did you use to live in South Africa? Many of the native African tribes here in SA are scared to death of these little buggers. I don't know about now but in earlier years I don't think there was a South African (native or not) who hadn't at least heard of the Thokoloshi. I wonder what my housekeeper will say when I show her this. :) You've done some really amazing work. I can't wait to see your short.

Actually, I'm from Botswana and people are afraid of them there too. They are a big part of African culture and to this day some people still take them seriously. They are known by many names, Thokolosi, Tikolosh, Tokoloshe, Imp, Water Brownie, Water Spirit and so on.
If you would like to know more about Thokolosi, there is a very good article about it at http://www.vanhunks.com/tokoloshe1.html

Small update: Added a sweater and did some tweaking to her clothing in general. These colors are just temporary, the pants are going to be textured with a denim texture. I'm going to put a head wrap on her head next to avoid having to do hair.

http://www.rit.edu/~ksl3424/Thokolosi/sedireng6.jpg

I decided to toss some joints in there for a quick test to see how she deforms. This way I can tell if I need to fix some of the modeling to allow for better deformation. I haven't painted any weights so I think it turned out pretty well. With some weight painting, I'm confident it will deform very nicely.

I decided against using cloth simulation for the clothes because Maya cloth is garbage and doesn't work right and since I don't have syflex, I'm just gonna skin the clothes. I don't really have the time to work with cloth anyway.

New character. This is Sangoma (witch doctor). He's very emaciated as you can see. I wanted a nasty looking character and so I decided on making him bony. He's going to be a little on the scary side when he's done. After I put a head on him, I'm going to give him clothes and accessories. If I have time, he will also get a ZBrush pass to push the detail.

I think it's a good effort but the character is a little flat and doesn't stand out. I don't feel the fear that this character is supposed to portray and the poly count is a little to high for a base mesh.

The old man (head) is pretty bland as well and needs an extra umph.

The texture on the bike could use some work but the modeling itself is great.

Thanks for the crit, MrJames. I still have a long way to go and it's a lot of hard work for one person to do. I still have to texture and animate them all myself. I'm in the UV Mapping stage at the moment so there will be no updates for a while. If I have time I might do ZBrush work on them too

okay -- i realize that it was a super long time ago when you posted him, and you've probably since, finalized him and moved on --- but thought i would comment anyways.

his triceps really stuck out to me --- they don't look correct, i.e. he has no triceps tendon, which gives the back/bottom of the arm its flatness before the ulna(sp?) / elbow.

i think his arms should have a little more definition, look more lean, to match his body more.

oh, and the lines / wrinkles / folds? starting from his lats going across the seratus(sp?) anterior to his obliques feel a little weird as well. Are they suppose to be folds / skin, or muscle?

sorry for my anatomy critique (as i'm sure you know well enough about anantomy) but these things just stuck out to me right away and i felt obligated to comment.

i really like him a lot though, as well with your other characters. i like how your characters feel more real to life, and not that cheap generic "perfect" body type. good stuff.

You are totally correct, amannin, the anatomy is not very accurate on the imp. I think the main reason for that is I modeled him first and this was over a year ago before I tightened up my knowledge of anatomy. I would go back and fix him but as it is I'm the only one working on this and I have a deadline for the whole animation so redoing a lot of stuff is just not an option right now. Also with him, I figure since he's a mythical creature I might be able to get away with it but I defintely agree with you. Thank for the help! :)
Thanks grafi and Guy In Rubber Suit for your comments too.

Hey Karabo!

just you're across-the-hall-coworker here!

Nice stuff! I really like the work you've done on the characters. I'm really fond of the Witchdoctor guy, he would be fun to animate. I can't wait to see them when they are textures and zbrushed.

My only crit so far is on the woman (the younger one) Her body is great but her face is almost too mascule/old. I think it has a lot to do with her "laugh lines". I think if you soften those up a bit she will look more femanine.. and maybe make the mouth a little less narrow? The profile works but in the front view the lines are too pronounced, The brow ridge might need to be softened too, women (of any ethnicitiy) have a less pronounced brow ridge then men... ok.. that's my 2 cents.. can't wait to see some animation!

Well, after an absence from this project for a few months, I'm back on it again with a vengeance. I need to finish this if I ever want to get my degree!
So....I decided to basically start the modeling from scratch because I wasn't happy with the previous models. I shouldn't have taken the realistic route in the first place and now I'm paying for it. Oh well, such is life. I decided to redesign the characters in a more cartoony fashion to make them more interesting and a little easier to rig and animate. Although these models are not as complex as the old ones, I think they are much more appealing and interesting and should be a lot more fun to work with. I tried to create my own cartoony style.
As usual, C&C is welcome and greatly appreciated although at this point, my main goal is to get this project finished for school ASAP so I don't want to spend too much time redoing things.
This first character, is the new Mompati character. He's the bad guy in the film hence the evil face. Feel free to let me know what you think.

Update on Thokolosi. Rig is done, just need to do some weighting. His tail can swtich between a regular spline IK setup and a dynamic secondary animation setup. Ears and fins are all animatable too

update on the living room set. I don't want it cluttered so I'm not gonna put much more in it.

After a millenium of no updates, I have some production stills. All animation and rendering is done now and I'm working on sound at the moment.
