View Full Version : Terragen export to Lightwave?
cyphyr 11-02-2005, 07:58 PM Hi gang
I know this is a bit of a chesnut and from the lists here, at NT forum, and Spline Quad there still seems to be no real solution, but I thought I'd ask anyway. Here goes
My intention is to render an animation in Terragen and then comp in lightwave models of trees and buildings etc. To do this I need the camera motion data (easly exported by a number of terragen plugins) and the terrain exported to a lwo file to catch shadows, and heres where the whole deck of cards falls down. Terragens export will only go to 257x257 point terrains, not enough to get good resolution from. I've tried exporting a heightmap in all available formats and thats next to useless! Is there any way to export higher resolution terragen informaation ACCURATELY?
Hoping for a solution

At this point you should be using Vue 5 for this. Your life would be much easier.

Never used the program before either. Just a thought. Can Terragen export some sort of color coded map of the height, cuz you could read that into a bump texture in LW, not sure how suitable that would be for you, but at least it would give you the proper heights.

BE CAREFUL !!
If you read the bottom of the page, his comments area has messages from some guests saying that there is a trojan (virus) embedded in the zip.
When someone tells you to "disable antivirus" to install a relatively basic program you should always be suspicious.
The programs that require you to actually disable antivirus to install them are not that common. These are usually things that really get their teeth deep into the operating system.
A conversion tool should not go that far, which is why I would be suspicious of it.
:)
BTW.. I am talking about "www.emyago.com" not "erikals"

Yes, I found that strange also, but since Terragen put up the link on their site, it seems more safe. Maybe. I agree it's somewhat of a gamble.
Edit: Searching on the web I found that you are right, it's in fact limited to 257*257 reso.
Read here. http://www.planetside.co.uk/terragen/guide/dlg_terrain.html
But I read this text in below link. "Data set size is limited to 257 by 257 points so the area of view needs to be carefully selected from a large data set. By paying a registration fee a version able to work with larger data sets can be obtained"
http://www.sli.unimelb.edu.au/envis/ass2004/Terragen_Assignment.htm
So seems it's not all that free after all.
Also take a look at this prog. It's $40 (for 8000x8000 reso or something)

Try the "For Export Only" plugin and use OBJ format. http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~jomeder/feo/

Try this page.

Terragen will output larger files if you register. I've extracted 2048x2048 before.
