View Full Version : OT: dual opt275 users here?
lllab 11-02-2005, 09:54 AM hi all, i think of getting a more recent machine than my curren xeon.
either now or i wait until 01/2006.
i am tending to switch to amd, because they are better with dual core i guess and also offer better graphic card performance i read.
today i calculated i would be able to build a dual275 for roughly 3000€. this machine has about 1250CB i heard (my xeon has 680)when i wait until 2006 i could get the 280 for less money..hmmm.
(normally i tend to wait until i would get twice as much cb than my xeon-that should be 1360cb.)
well before making a decision i would like to hear from users of such machines-
a) do they really get 1250+CB?
b) is graphic card performace really still beteer under amd?
c) is there anything coll new stuff coming in early 06 worth to wait?
d) is it a real problem to mix up cpus-intel+amd ( i heard not in maxwell, not in FR2)
d) any other advice or suggestion...
i would be very thankful for any real life experience before investing into a new machine,
cheers
& thanks:-)

AMD will introduce a new socket (M2) in 2006 and processors with DDR2 support (higher mem bandwidth).
And then (according to several news sites - google about "nforce 4 data corruption") there could be a possible problem with nforce motherboards that might be fixed with the next rev. of the nvidia chipset.
Best regards,

a) do they really get 1250+CB?
Yes (but I think that's only with the 64-bit version -- not that this is a problem with an Opteron 275 system.)
b) is graphic card performace really still beteer under amd?
For the most part, yes.
c) is there anything coll new stuff coming in early 06 worth to wait?
Naturally. This is the tech industry, that sort of question will almost always get a "yes" answer :)
d) is it a real problem to mix up cpus-intel+amd ( i heard not in maxwell, not in FR2)
You can work around it when it does become an issue. It is one of the motivations behind the sophisticated baking tools that are becoming the norm these days.

thanks thalaxis,
do you work on such a machine, have you a "nforce4 problem"?
when you work on 64bit how many plugin are available for that? i havent found a single one for 64bit...
well i think this will be quite a heavy transition.

My Athlon64 has an ATI chipset, so it's not going to be much help in that regard.

I haven't upgraded to Win64 myself, for exactly that reason. Dual-booting is a viable option, but for the moment, until the transition to 64-bit makes a bit more progress, it's also going to be a necessity for some things. Fortunately, most 32-bit software does run in xp64 now, so if you can convince Maxon to let you run a 32-bit + a 64-bit version of Cinema, you can ease the transition a bit by using both versions in xp64, though obviously it won't be as pleasant as just having all of the plugins in the 64-bit Cinema.
I'm probably going to be going through the same thing in the near future; I'm planning to put together an Athlon64 dual-core box for myself this winter (Christmas is a good excuse for it :)).

wait! You'll be sorry if you don't! I guarantee if you buy now, you'll be angry in January with the way the graphics card industry is battling it out right now. The hard disk industry is in fierce competition as well. It's a really good time to wait.
If you wait 'till a little after January and you file your taxes early (if you have a return coming) it could work out very well.

well i wouldnt buy a new graphikcard also just a basic disk, i have all storage at my raid-server.
its all just about more renderspeed...i know you can always wait. its just i dont want to buy "v1" hardware full of bugs, or overpriced stuff that will cost dramatically less than now...
i have to think, maybe i also tend to wait for christmas:-)
cheers
