hey folks, i have been sketching for a while now, in the last few weeks i have progressed a bit
mainly due to the great tutorials by rebecca and slux, i would like to say that i mainly focused on getting better at shading.

i apologize for the bad quality of the pictures, i am using a digital camera to capture the sketches and its night time.

warpyy,

Great to see your work thread! :) I am glad you've decided to set this up ~ would you mind if I renamed your thread to "Anatomy thread of warpyy"? This helps me to keep things consistent, and organized. :)

I really like your pieces here, and can see a lot of progress from you! The first drawing in particular is quite nice ~ was this done from photo reference?

I'd definitely like to see you delve into doing some anatomy studies soon. I think they would really help you out. :) Looking forward to seeing some more work from you!

Cheers, :)

hi rebecca,

i dont mind you renaming the thread, but its not just an anatomy thread.
all my drawings are done while i am sitting in coffee shops in at night time,
i usually pick a someone that sits around me or a picture that is hanging off a wall.
and draw it. the waiter figure is realy a painting that was in a local coffee shop near here.

thanks for posting, guess you are the only one that liked this :)

Hi
I'am glad to see you have your own thread :) hehe and also that my little tut have helped you.
If you want to improve your figure drawing than I would recomment Loomis book - Figure Drawing its really great .. it will teach you right proportions and how to draw correct human figure but don't forget just reading itsn't enough and thats true for all these art books ... you have to practise everything what you read ... for example with this Loomis book I have drawn some of his demo pictures more that 50 times .... until I could draw it perfectly without reference ... but I'am still not finished with it :D .... and btw you can find all his books here http://www.saveloomis.org
Anyway just keep practising and don't worry if folks don't post many replies just keep going.
good luck

- Slux

Heya warpyy, :)

No prob then ~ the sketchbook title shall remain. How about, though, "Sketchbook of warpyy"? That way, if others want to create the same, I can keep things organized. Pleeeze? :)

Looking forward to seeing more work! :)

the first two was done last night, the vamp one is under the inspiration i got from neb (link at the bottom !!)
the eyes and nose are of a friend of mine, as you can see (or not because of the crappy scanner, even the digicam is better, anyways..) as you can see it looks real :)
the last before 3rd was done quickly in school, and then rendered over a cafe the later on the same day.
the last one.. was a bad attempt at drawing someone who was moving constantly infront of me.. sucks

warppy,

I think you are improving!

I think someone's thread you should check out, if you have not already seen his work, is Erich's:

Anatomy Thread of Erich Schreiner (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=297560)

He's lately been doing a lot of master copies, which I think would be really useful for you to start doing at some point as well. :)

Looking good, keep going!

okay i managed to finish the begining of the sketch above,
we went to our usual coffee shop and the same girl from last week came with us. so i decided to finish it, i learned a few things out of this:
1. the more detail you put into the facial parts, the more realistically it will get.
2. her hair was totaly different and i just couldnt draw it. so i made her hair smooth, which killed some of the portrait's charm.
3. i need to work on more lips, cheek, chins, hair.

warpyy,

Nice to see an update! I think the way you've observed the nose is quite nice ~ the lips could use a bit more work, but I do see that you are making progress. :)

Forgive me if I've asked you this already, but do you have in your possession any of the Burne Hogarth series of books?

I think these would be of real interest to you ~ as he breaks down form really amazingly well.

Of particular interest might be this one:

Drawing the Human Head (Paperback) (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0823013766/sr=1-3/qid=1137247244/ref=pd_bbs_3/103-1006929-2180651?%5Fencoding=UTF8)

warpy
01-14-2006, 02:02 PM
@becca : no forgiveness needed :) nope have not heard of him, will check the book, it looks nice :)

@calisto : thanksies :)

about the nose, i am not fully satisfied with it, it has a flaw or two, i am however very satisfied with the eyes. you cant realy see the amount of detail the paper holds. please consider that this was taken with a digicam at 5MP then shrunk down 50% insize, saved as a level 10 jpeg, so 3 steps of losing so much detail.. shame but i cant help it or the picture would have been about 5MB in total.

thanks for all the love and support :)

warpyy,

Burne Hogarth has a lot of great books (http://www.amazon.com/gp/search/ref=br_ss_hs/103-1006929-2180651?search-alias=aps&keywords=Burne%20Hogarth), any of which I would recommend.

The first one in this (partial) list I've already mentioned:

Drawing the Human Head (Paperback) (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0823013766/sr=1-3/qid=1137251099/ref=pd_bbs_3/103-1006929-2180651?%5Fencoding=UTF8)

Dynamic Anatomy (Paperback) (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0823015521/sr=1-1/qid=1137251099/ref=pd_bbs_1/103-1006929-2180651?%5Fencoding=UTF8)

Dynamic Figure Drawing (Paperback) (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0823015777/sr=1-2/qid=1137251099/ref=pd_bbs_2/103-1006929-2180651?%5Fencoding=UTF8)

Drawing Dynamic Hands (Paperback) (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0823013685/sr=1-6/qid=1137251099/ref=pd_bbs_6/103-1006929-2180651?%5Fencoding=UTF8)

Great books! I had one of his last classes ~ amazing person and teacher.

warppy,

I think that last one is looking pretty decent ~ :) ~ I would just tone down the background a bit, as currently it is a bit overpowering. You want the focus to be primarily on the figure, not the gradient behind him, so if you desaturated / darkened the background a bit, I think this would improve the overall picture. :)

warppy,

The last background is kind of cool, but it overpowers the figure...I would suggest toning down the background, or really reinforcing the rendering of the figure so that it can sustain the competition from the fireball in the back. :)

Warpy,

Nice to see your work here. :)

I think something you might do is to do several full sheets of just eyes, just nose, just lips, just ears, etc. ~ the only way to really get better at practicing features is to draw them from all tilts and angles ~ obviously, the more, the better. :)

Why not start with a sheet of eyes?

Hi warpy,

I am liking the upper version, though I think the rays should be a bit more parallel, and perhaps a bit more subtle. You might try taking your second version and adding rays on a different layer, and playing a bit with the blending modes for a subtle effect.

How are your figure studies going? :)
