View Full Version : what are the restrictions or conditions for using a "flat mirror" map?

the following refers to the attached image (Test_Render_19.jpg)

i'm trying to avoid using a raytrace material for the floorboards (too damn slow to render), but it's the only way i can get the reflections. just as a test i've applied the same "granite" texture from the bench to the floor. why doesn't it create reflections on the floor surface when it's exactly the same material (it has a "speckle" map in the diffuse slot and a "flat mirror" in the reflection slot)?

cheers.

Odd...

I would say that there must be a setting somewhere that you've overlooked. As for getting reflections without using raytrace materials - surely you can have something reflective without using them?
I haven't used Max in a long time, but as far as I can recall, you don't have to use raytrace material types if you just want a normal reflection....

Cool

IF you are still having a problem... well then it is surely a mystery :)

i think that if you want to use a flat mirror map, you have to apply it only to sets of coplanar faces.

you can try the reflect/refract map, or the raytrace map (not raytrace material).
