Hi there. I saw that some ppl has problem with SSS shader not working if there is multi mapped object. Here is little tut how to make SSS working if you have different maps for different parts of object using vertex paint modifier.
Step 1.
First separate your model to as much Mat ID-s as you want and unwrap every part.

For easier work, colapse all modifiers or just convert to the editable poly.

Step 2.
In difuse slot of SSS shader select Mix map.

Step 3.
Do what next picture says, it is a little confusing, but if you take a look better it is reasonable (sorry, but it will be harder to explain correctly with my english, and ... one picture worth 1000 words, lol)
Note: First Mix map is used to separate this objest in two groups:
1. head and body
2. feet and hands
And so on, next mix maps separate heads from body, and feet from hands.
In mix amount slots you'll add Vertex color map.

Step 4.
Add VERTEX PAINT modifier to your object. Paint head and body polys full black and other clear white. Adjust Map channel number.
Add another VERTEX PAINT modifier and paint head white and whole other body black. Adjust Map channel number.
Add again VERTEX PAINT modifier and paint hands White and whole other body black. Adjust Map channel number.

And take a look. SSS is working now. If you want you can collapse modifiers again.

If you have trouble to understand this tut feel free to ask.
Again, sorry for my english.
