hello, i have downloaded a zip-file that contains the installation files of suse linux 10.0. i burned the files on a dvd-rom using nero (the files, not an iso). now if i want to start my pc with the cd-rom inserted, it just boots windows. if i disable booting from hd it gives an error that no system disk is found, while the linux dvd is inserted. i tried multiple solutions, like rawrite, but i don't know how to use it (rawritewin asks for an image file, wich image file and where to find it?). does anyone know another solution to install linux with a non-booting dvd-rom? i'm pretty new to it and have to learn a lot. i really appreciate your help. thanx on advance

greetings

If you download just the install files for SuSE, and not an ISO, you will not have any boot images on your CD/DVD once you burn it. This means the disk will not be bootable. In most cases you will probably need some sort of boot disk (as described by the readme for the installation) to start the installation.

The simplest thing would be to just go find an ISO insted. Of cource you could always follow the directions to install SuSE from just the files.. If I recall though, SuSE does not come in a ISO usually. This is because they want you to buy it...

http://www.opensuse.org/Released_Version for the Open Source Version or http://www.novell.com/products/suselinux/downloads/suse_linux/instructions_eval.html for the "Evaluation" Version which is the commercial version minus some licensed content that you can download seperately (mp3 playback for example). Add the packman repositories for that. http://www.opensuse.org/User_Documentation and http://www.opensuse.org/Additional_YaST_Package_Repositories#Packman

As for your question, there are ways, but I strongly advise you to download and burn the iso´s to save you lots of headache.

Actually there is no need. On Fedora e.g. there are the boot files sperated for download as i believe 8 mb isos somewhere. I just downloaded these burnt on CD-RW, booted with it and then inserted the dvd with the installation files. Didn't want to download and burn the dvd again :banghead:

Well technically, if you can get the boot images, then you're set. Nero will let you burn the boot images right onto the CD's boot sector, then you just put the rest of the files on the disk and you've got a fully functional boot CD/DVD. Of cource you may just need to extract the boot image from those ISOs, but there are tools for such things...

already downloading the iso. i can try to extract the boot images from the iso, and burn them on my old dvd-rom, if it works, i saved myself a dvd:), if not, well, too bad for the dvd, but then a new one comes in place. thanks for your help all
