Two days before the deadline of a job my PC starts resetting itself randomly and will only start after about ten tries on resetting and switching it on and off. I am climbing the wall as I am probably stupidly trying to soldier no through this but it is getting increasingly difficult. The messages I sometimes get tell me the file NTLDR is missing and sometimes I get:

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: System32/Drivers/ntfs.sys"

It all sounds pretty serious and I am really starting to worry. My machine specs are:

Intel P4 3.2
Intel D875PBZ
Windows XP Version 5.1 Service Pack 1 build 2600
2,095,780 kb RAM
ATI Radeon 9800 256MB

All in all I am pretty worried, anyone have any ideas?

p.s. I should probably add that I do not have much experience in fixing PCs so please speak slowly and explain the big words if you know what I mean.

does your harddrive sound funny?

does you computer smell funny?

if not, you have a chance, first get your hands on Erd commander, failing that, you want the recovery console(from the XP install disk), and do a chkdsk(or similar command type help and it'll give you a list of commands)

basically you need to scan your disk to see if bits have died, then if yoor computer fails to load still you can repair install from XP which will recopy a set of defualt drivers onto your computer, but it lets you keep your exsisting applications and settings.

Sounds like your ram may be acting up.
Download a copy of memtest86 (iso version) and burn it to a cd and boot of that cd, and let it run a full test. Should take about 45mins (depends on your system)

If you get any errors your ram might be messed up.
