Here are a few profile variation on the human form.
I plan to do several more.
People come in all shapes and sizes and I think that
the artist involved in depicting the human form should
be aware of the variety.
There are differences in body type, gender, age, ethnic
background and a myriad of other factors.
Da Vinci and Durer were certainly aware of this
as was William Rimmer MD. who was a
medical doctor as well as an artist.
The other reason that I think this is important is
that the balance/placement of the head on
top to the torso also depends somewhat
on body type and other physical factors.
More to come....

Hi...DOC... :)
BEAUTIFUL RYTHUM AND MOVEMENT IN THAT LAST GROUP...:bounce:
Was thinking that in your book, you should have a whole chapter devoted to the importance of developing the memory muscle....like the minute you take your eye off of the model, you are working totally from memory kind of thing,..and this is when imagination kicks in...and that is why it is so important to work from and develope not only the memory muscle, but also the imagination muscle to use that memory with...just a passing thought, might make an interesting chapter in your book..:)

There are several more to
be posted once I photograph them.
Hey Doc Mic Ment...:D
These are absolutely gorgeous.
There's so much understanding, even in the slightly alienated anatomy, of the human form in them, and the poses and their interaction is just so enchanting... maybe a bit rather like the three sirens than three graces...
In the first one I love the strong and hot saturated orange spots which indicate the heavy blood supply areas. Also the way the forms kind of dissolve into abstract ideas of them is wonderfully executed.
The interaction between cool and warm hues in the second one is really exciting. So much to read there, like in a good book.
Third one is funny - and while it conveys the feeling of a loose and energetic sketch it really has all the depth a painting needs to feed a viewer's interest over a longer time than just the inital "whoa".
The "egyptian-esque", last one is my favourite. The tender core-shadows support the expressive poses in a way that together with the overall composition of your characters this looks like a ballet snapshot or an ancient ritual.
holysmokes, mayun! It's hawt!

This One Is Just A Dry Run Thru
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v413/mentler/The%20Book%20of%20Bones/advd.jpg
hey,
you know what struck me today? I don't know if I ever mentioned it, but one thing that really fascinates me about you is how your determination to make every stroke just look good even extends into the realm of written words.
I mean, I was having a real hard time deciphering your ideas and notes on some of your previous anatomy studies, but all the time I knew it had much to do with the fact that you used a highly stylized form of handwriting.
And now, after this new set of wonderful pastels, when I checked out the writing on the board it kinda hit me over the head that here is a man who wants to make sure that even his writing looks like a painting.
This is otherworldly, really...:scream:
The shaded face in the second one is electrifying. Such a small area in the painting, but a vast area for emotional projections.
I love the liquid honey forms in the third one.
The combination of reflected light areas and cool against warm (again) in the last one defies the two-dimensionality of the medium itself... it looks more like a sculpture and the fact that you combined this with the flat areas in the background which kind of scream "the world is flat" is unbearably masterful.
I hope that one far away day, probably only when I am already white-haired and mumbling incomprehensible stuff into my beard while my nurse prepares lunch, I will be able to master so many aspects of creating figurative paintings in a similar way.
I will be thinking of your stuff, then.

Wow...all of your work is great, but I really, really love those hand studies.
Overall, your line work is so lively, but still so clean. I find in my own drawings that in order to get some life into them, I have to be really loose, but my drawings are often really messy. I really admire your ability to keep the lines so clean lwithout having everything look rigid.
Your handwriting is also super cool. :)

These look like they shouldn't just incorporated into a painting. They look as if you should create the whole painting around them!
They are as talkative as a gossipmonger while maintaining an air of refined 19th century ennui.

A couple a pages and a
few thoughts about
eyes and expression.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v413/mentler/The%20Book%20of%20Bones/bob062008a.jpg
One thing that I have not
seen explained in the books
are the reasons for the angle
of the eye in profile.
There are several factors that
contribute to the severity of
the angle.
Number one is that the axis of
the eye ball is pointed slightly
downward when we are looking
straight ahead.
Second the upper lid usually crosses
the thickness of the iris and the lower
lid generally passes under it.
The third factor that is often
overlooked is that the upper
lid is considerably thicker than
the lower lid.
All of these factors taken together
account for the angle or slant of
the lids from a profile view.
This angle is usually underestimated
by beginners and many
experienced artists.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v413/mentler/The%20Book%20of%20Bones/bob062008b.jpg
We generally draw our own features
because we have looked at them
thousands of times.
Most of us have developed a
generic shorthand for eyes which
does not take into consideration
the expressive qualities that are
present in the model.
I also think that it is important
to draw the whole head or
at least the socket and side
of the nose when drawing
eyes.
It is my belief that we should
take every opportunity to
see the relationship of each
piece of the puzzle to its
surroundings.
These are just a few of
the possible expressions.
If you intend to be an
illustrator or portrait artist
you should spend some
time learning are expression.

Glenn I start all
my works now with
this grid
It is in many ways
the classical approach
to composition
but I use it more
as a way to get
started and get
the feel and rhythm
of the page
I especially like
having some
diagonals on
the page to
relate angles to
Since the proportional
system I use is
based on gridded
figure I think I
subconsiously
relate that to
these grids
SpiritDreamer
09-14-2008, 03:15 PM
:) HEY DOC..Thanks for explaining that..I think I get it now...GREAT system and use of it. ..It allows you to relate to everything properly in the composition ..depthwise, ballancewise, and rhythmwise.
Simple, but very effective way of breaking up the negitive space surrounding the figure, creating depth, ballance, and rhythm throughout the picture plane, and ending up with UNITY in the end, at the same time..BEAUTIFUL..:bounce::)
Keep INSPIRED and INSPIRING DOC.

Here is
the latest
little head
demo from
SoFA's Tuesday
afternoon group
It terms of color
I use a variety of
materials and
try not to get
into to much
of a procedure mode
This last one was
done primarily with
a Payne's Gray nu-pastel
I try to have a variety
of material available
and often mix dry
and wet media
I just try to
get into the
drawing and
not over think it
I aim more for
attitude and
expression than I do
accuracy or realism

This one of the exercises from
my online figure structure workshop
L'Exerciizio ::: 42
Torso (Rhomboids and Serratus Anterior)
Rhomboids:
There are two muscles in the Rhomboid group,
the Rhomboid Minor which originates at the Seventh
Cervical Vertebra and inserts at the spine of
the Scapula and the Rhomboid Major which originates
at the Dorsals down to the fifth vertebra and
inserts at the outer edge of the Scapula
Serratus Anterior:
The Serratus Anterior muscles originate at far
underside edge of the Scapula almost connecting
with the Rhomboid group and insert on each rib
down to the Eight Thoratic sometimes even the
ninth.
Since both of these muscle group attach to the
Scapula it is obvious that they work together
to pull the Scapula; backward, forward, up and
down. The Scapula is not attached to other
bony structures and floats around the rib
cage with the assistance of these two
muscle groups.
There is a third muscle that gets involved
that we will deal with at some point called
the Levator Scapulae which originates just
behind the Sternal Mastoid and inserts
at the top of the blade of the Scapula.
Were get into the muscles of the Shoudler
next and work are way down the arm.

Hiya,
I relaly love your style. It is reminiscent of sketches of antiquity. The movement of your gestures are really nice. I like how you keep the form and weight with your gestures. You work always makes me want to sketch. Keep them coming :)

Dottore!
I find it quite fascinating how you have hit on a never-ending topic with your three ladies. I never tire of seeing a new take on the same theme by you.
I love the tension in the female head study, starting from the collar bone reaching up to the forehead. It's really amazing.
What do you use for highlighting on your studies? White ink pens?
Have a wonderful new year, Doc!

Back To Some Basics
Actually It Is Always
About The Basics
Focusing On Features For
A Couple Of Weeks
To Bone Up On
The Finer Points Of
Form & Structure
Have Been Looking At
Vanderpoel And Have
Gotten Some Good Stuff
From His Little Book.
Read The Copy As It
Relates Very Well To
The Little Drawings
Next To It.
As You Can See I Put Most
Of The Studies In Heads
Instead Of Treating Them
As Individual Objects.
I Think That It Is
Extremely Important
To Relate The Parts
To The Whole As
Much And As Often
As Possible.
It Seems To Me That
Vanderpoel Was Well
Understood By Bridgman
As His Book And Hatton's
Were The Main Sources
Available At The Time.
