Recently I purchased 2 optical drives to put into my computer, I had trouble getting them to work and after prompt response from you guys we came to the solution that the IDE cable was faulty, so I replaced it and low and behold it worked.
I now had been using the 2 drives for 3 weeks when during a test session for my quake 4 models the game froze and I was forced to do a cold shut down.
Upon restart the drives where gone.
I went to my bios and found that optical drives where still there in 3 master and slave and I started my computer to have them once again.
But the next day the drives where gone again so I did the same thing, but this time the drives where gone in the bios too. I opened my case and made sure everything was wired correctly and restarted my comp while watching the drives, whom both show sign of life.

Anyways I dont think I can manage to get my hands on a new IDE cable for a while to see if it fixes things.

But I was hoping that you guys might have any ideas?

As these are new drives, are you using 80 wire IDE cables or did the drives come with cables in the package?

Sorry - that's all I can think of at the moment. It's a puzzler.
