hi guys.

i have a very big problem. i heard this thing can be done in xsi, 3dsmax5, but i can't do it in maya.

the thing is:
i have 2 planes, 1 light. the light is a normal point light with default settings. the 1st plane is the ground plane. the second plane has an orange diffuse material with translucence. it has a 0.001 transparent value, so the light can pass thru. as you see with a translucent depth of 10.00 in the raytrace options.

so after setting these values, i get this result, when i render the scene:

BUT!!!!

i want to set up the orange plane's attributes, that if i render the scene, i get this result below.
as u see, the plane colorizes the light rays, that passes through the plane, and i get yellow light on the ground.
this image is a fake, colored in photoshop.

can it be done in some way in maya????
in maya built in renderer or in mentalray?

and what if i want to set up a file texture to the plane?? like a big painted glass in a church?

hope you can help me!!! thank you guys!

and here's a closeup on the expected image.

thanks again!!!!

Hi,

Setting a translucent value for an object doesn't mean that the light ray will be affected by this object on another one.

If you use ray-traced shadows, increase the transparency of the square to get colored shadows (but it won't give anyway the result you expect: it'll be an overall orange shadow)

I suggest you to use dmap shadows, you need to use a spot light. In its effect options, you have create Color curves (if I remember well)

This will let you adjust the color of the shadows, according the distance from the light to the objects.

Take a look at the section lights and shadows in the manual, and I hope this will help you...

hi pixho. thanks for the answer.

i now that the translucence in the Common Material Attributes section doesn't do this effect, it only does (in my case) that you can see that it's actually orange.
but the translucence depth in the Raytrace section does. it allows you to let pass through some lightrays from lightsources. i want to do that this passed light inherits the color of the surface (the orange plane).
and the shadows??? i want to make it black.

conclusion: i want the passed light's color to be a blend between the original light's color and the translucence surface's color.

i went down below in the hypershade and it's available nodes but i couldn't find how can i reach these passed through rays.

oh yeah. and one other thing. i don't want to fake this with projected color or projected file textures.

and hope you understand my pour english :)

thanks for helping me!!

yesterday i talked one of my friends, and he told me that this effect can be done with mental ray, but he doesn't know exactly how.

can this be true???
how???

help me guys, i have to know this! really!

thanks!!

Here's what I tried, using raytraced shadows and a point light with quadratic falloff to make the shadow lose its colour. This will take a very long time to render however. You'd be best off trying what Monsieur pixho suggested.:)

thank you Judge Drury.

actually this is a good way doing this if you have this specific scene. but what if it's daytime. the plane will become transparent :(

actually i found a way yesterday. mentalray and final gather!!!! it can make this effect in various ways. but if i want to use texture files, i guess i have to fake the thing :(

thanks for helping!!!
