I'm in the process of building a robot for fun... not sure what I'll do with him just yet though. I did not do a reference drawing for this guy, so he's going to be a freehand model... making him up as I go.

I appreciate C&C for the design and modeling elements... the textures are super generic right now (just so you know that I know http://3dbuzz.com/vbforum/images/smilies/wink.gif ).

Here's a few shots of the model to this point;
I'm still working out how to make the gear works in the main body section interesting, but the gears are at lease animated and it gives a basic idea of what I'm after.

Here's a shot of the palm;

The rigging for the head (if you can call it that) is more or less in place. Still needs more features though I think, not busy enough for my liking but I'm not sure what else to add in. The whole head section pivots on one axis, each joint allows for the up and down movements while the base provides the side to side rotation.

The Mechanical Iris is able to dilate as well. The iris is a cone with an Edit Poly modifier. I wired one of the radiuses to a custom attribute in the LookAt target for the eyes.

I got a program from someone on 3dbuzz.com that will create an animation of an oscilloscope visualization for a sound file, which I will eventually use to animate the screen that acts as the mouth. I'm intending to put in some rust, paint chipping, rough spots, etc. when I get to texturing, but right now I'm just trying to knowk out the basic shape (texturing isn't my forte). The tough part is getting enough random junk into it to make it look believable (and functional enough to animate).

I could also use some suggestions for the feet... I'm not sure how I'm going to go about building those yet. I'm thinking to make something rounded and shoe like, but the bend in the toes is going to be a problem. Any thoughts?

This is my first WIP here, I appreciate any input!

I'm adding more detail to the central gearbox (adding wires, tubes, etc). I want to add some LED type lights to this guy, but I am not very good with lighting an texturing. Does anyone know of a good tutorial for generating this type of effect?

I'm also working on the design for the feet and legs... hope to have those up soon.

phionix - Thanks for the encouragement. For someone like me who's realtivly new to the craft it's much needed and appreciated.

Here's an update on this robot character. I've redone the upper arms totally so that they better fit with the overall design of the character and added a bunch of junk to the chest area. I need to figure out how to add some sort of LED type lights to the gizmos in there at some point, but the design changes should help with animation and characterization down the road.

The upper arm has a telescoping piston in it right now. I'm planning to add some wires and other filler as it goes.

I appreciate any feedback!

looking really good so far :) as you are still working out the concept freehand i can't really do much in the way of critiquing---though i believe you definitely have an interesting start going for ya

Looks really good so far, I really like those hands. Only thing hitting me is that perhaps the body is too small relative to the forearms, but different is good, and there's no rules for a robot.

Here's another update... I'm building this in my free time and there hasn't been as much of it lately. Hopefully I'll have more tomorrow as time allows.

More of the gearworks (the gears and various moving parts are animated, I intend to post an AVI when the modeling is done)

The lower legs will be added and I intend to make them similar in style to the forearms. I still need to workout how to attach the lower body to the torso but that's coming along.

Let me know what you think... this character is totally freeform and I'm not overly attached to any part of it. I don't have any experience with design, so making the over all look of the character fit together is a bit of a chalange to me.

I started with the head and began working out from there. At this point I'm contemplating killing that off and making a head that is a closer fit (in terms of design) with the rest of the body.

Any opinions?
Thanks in advance for any pointers and comments!
