Nessus and Déjanire
Resulting from mythology Greek, the history tells that Hercules
after are victorious combat against crystallized Archeloos his
Déjanire wife with the Nessus Centaurs so that it helps it to cross a
river, But this last tomb in love with the girl and tries to remove
it, following that, Hercules kills the Centaur of an arrow, But before
dying Nessus will give a little its blood to Déjanire allowing him to
make a filter suitable to ensure the love to him eternal of his
Hercules husband.
This topic of mythology was treated by many artists through the
centuries.
I want since long time to treat this topic which interests me by its
content passion and these graphic possibility.
My scene is held close of the Louvre in decorations of ruin, or the
heroes of these legends take again life again to play the scene and to
show us our passions.

Hi Tranchefeux, good to see you join us!
What a powerful start you've made too, though I must say the first thing I thought of when I saw it was Frank Frazetta's 1974 cover to The Moon Maid.
I really liked your space opera pic, it was one of my favourites, a very unique style. Your master and servant entry was good, though I felt it to be a bit evenly busy all over and I think the same thing is happening here, though I know it's a very early stage. I find the shapes of the centaur and woman are really struggling to emerge from the very busy background, so maybe you need to make sure your value blocks are better separated - the girl's dress seems to merge with the rubble in the background for instance. Another thing would be to make sure that you only put a lot of detail and texture into the primary areas of focus, something Frazetta was a master of and something I always try to keep in mind.
Good luck with the challenge!

Good to see you back, Tranchefeux! I've always liked your work, and your GSO entry was incredibly original.
This one... not so much so far, but hey, it's only your first post, there'll be time for tons more. As for crits, can't think of anything to say that Speaky didn't cover above. Especially the Frazetta comparison.
Good luck for the continuation, and have fun!

Hi, rich and detailed picture once again !
However the composition doesn't seem really "spectacular", a bit too centered for me.
But on the other hand, your textures are spectacular... Let's see the finish !
Good luck !

Kemar; Thank you compatriot for large talents, I like much your
painting and his architecture.
Jose Pardo: Thank you your supports you.
Speaky: Thank you for your comments, yes I know the painting of
Frazetta or it with represented the centaur and Déjanire, that would
not astonish me that it it is inspired him even of this history of
mythology Greek, and that it is desired to give its version of this
topic taken again much and represented by many artists before him. In
spite of the a little similar spirit of its painting, by the dynamics
of the diagonal one which was for me best the option, my realization
will be different and will keep the style between primitive Flemish
and Baroque which I love so much.
Beelow; Thank you for the comment.

Déjanire by improving the drawing and work about it volumes the best
possible one a color, I have to rout my character for more precision.

So it seems that you have come here to humiliate me with your skills
Everything seems great, but ease down with the back muscles of the centauri. Do some soft areas also. Emphasize muscles that normally grow big not all tiny muscles to get better real feeling.
Female looks great and so does the drapery she has.
Good luck! :)

the concept alone is beautiful, even with it being just a preliminary view on the scene. But with the hashed out details of the woman, I can see your final pieces details will be nothing less than the beauty she contains in her single work. I love it, incredible detail, smooth. very nice indeed.

Eric, I really like your work.:)
This entry is reminding the "old masters" of rennaisance, and I like your approach.
The contrast between the fragile woman and the bold and massive centaur.
A note about the muscles on the back:
although this is a fantastic animal so the anatomy and muscle topology can afford to differ from the humans a bit, the right side is not the same with the left one.
Especially in the lower traps before the dorsals, it has to become more consistent on each side.
I prefer the left side.
(Have looked up any bodybuilding photos were they use these poses?)
Also his left arm veins are a bit too obvious, like branches, maybe you can smooth some places in, so they blend more with the arm.
I love the detail and the textures.
Womans head maybe a bit bigger?
Horse is awesome.
Keep up, man:thumbsup:

Striking piece Eric, and the gurl is simply too sweet. his spearhand actually looks a slight bit too small, hollow or not gripping the spear, maybe a decent lightup on the contours of his inside of his hand (that sss blabla and fresnel thingy :p) the thumbpart of the palm (venushill?) or the fingers in the shadowarea solve that.

one thing however, is that the centaur looks like he is only standing on one leg, something I have never seen a horse do, or think is capable of doing. maybe both hind legs, or hooves should be on the ground?

Eric, I've already said how much I like your work.
But I have some doubts with the backgroung.
1st: it's a bit too fussy, especially behind the woman, and unless in the colouring you make a clear distinction of the foreground characters and the backround, I feel the bg robs from the centaur&woman...
2nd: those stone/rubles don't seem to fit in the enviroment you've made, with the sculpures, palace aggrandisement etc...
Just my $0.2

It's beautiful work, Tranchefeux! Lovely textures and lighting... and everything! I love the rendering on the woman's back... but there's also something bothering me about her. Hope you don't mind my pointing this out, but it seems to me like her head is much too small for her body, and her lrgs pehaps too long? It seems to me as though if you were to extend those legs and picture her standing up, she would be at least 9 heads tall!
Just my opinion, but I thought it might be helkpful to point it out before you get to coloring. Good luck!

your work is just... breathtaking. really. I'm very very very impressed. If I am to crit anything it would be the breast of the girl, her hair and the horse's tail. The breast I'd give mayby a bit higher? I'm not sure, but something is wrong with it. Hair and the tail - they look as they didn't belong to the body and ( I'm not sure how to say that) the part of hair being further from the body was growing out of the hair itself not from the body. for example look at the tail. at the very beginning it's very thin, but then it turns into huge brush. Where is all this hair from? However the picture is reeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaallllly amazing. good luck!

Now I begin the colors with copies which is over my drawing
what enables me to seek my hues without touching with the drawing,
this process is rather fast, because all the work of the details is
already to realize, the stages following will consist in enriching the

Very nice. Only one thing that bothers me it looks like your showing too much of her breast/ribcage compared to her back.

11-17-2005, 04:01 PM
wow, first impression is very good. but as zpapageo said, there are too many
things important in this piece. i mean the level of detail is great but the
viewers attention has to be more controlled.
greetings and don't get me wrong. it's a beautiful and powerful piece !

Progression of the setting color on the decorations, I worked
on the rocks of the bottom, like front the statue of the lion. I do
not seek to imitate a photo objective which would like that the bottom
is fuzzier and less detailed, but rather a vision like those of
primitive Flamants of the 1400 century or each part of painting is
neat to appreciate it by far, like very very ready one.

Splendide eric!Very beautiful job, i'm going to say the same thing like botho81 and zpapageo said (too many details) but by thinking and viewing your job ( in totality), it seems to be your style. i mean, by putting details and details you've found your own style Eric. en + de ça c'est bien maitrisé!!! So...keep goin'on Eric that rocks!!

hey man, i love your painting, is very simbolic and is so well done, is amazing. i only have to say, when i saw the image the first time i didnt notice the right front leg of the horse. or the manhorse, whatever jeje, idont know english... well i was thinking that maybe you can put some kind of fill light there or something on the borders of those legs of the front, maybe on the hair. you know, how looks the hair when the lights come behind it.... would be cool and will help to make the legs more visible.
see you later man, see my thread please and give me some critics, i see that you can have some advices for me. you are a great artist. have fun!!!

I was thinking about painting in greyscale and adding colour later, just don't know which technique is best for me. Need to practice and see.
I love all the textures, rock, hair, clouds... It's all great! Well done.

Here the installation of the color as a whole finished, I will
now be able to look further into the details which will be visible in
the maximum resolution or when I would make an impression in large
size, I would post zooms for shown the differences, I go then create
the Hercules character that I would like to see in my painting with

Here painting as a whole after this work of completion, with this size
of image (150 Kb) have practically do not smell a difference with the
version of front, but if I makes an impression on large sizes there
will be really a difference. It remains to me now with creates the
character of Hercules whom I wish to see appearing in painting in far.

The only thing that detracts is a lack of imagination - particularly compared to your own Space Opera entry.

This topic of painting is resulting from mythology Greek, it at
summer treated of many time through the centuries and I wanted to make
my version of this history, I like the content emotional of this
subject which treats passion in love and tearing that it involves, I
think that human passions can be sometimes spectacular, here the love
of a woman will result in the death of Nesus per Hercules.
I have to also try for this challenge to push a little my pictorial work on
returned matters for effects spectacular!!!
Thank you for your supports and good luck with all the participants.

Hi Eric,
Im sorry to say that I'm not that impressed. It seems like you put a lot of work in detailing the picture but compositionwise it's not that great. The characters seem very detached, the house and statue too, by the way..
It is as if you made a composition from existing elements, that's maybe te reason they don't communicate. Also a bit suspicious that you never posted sketches. The sky falls way out of style with the rest.
I dont't post a lot so I'm just a small voice, but I saw this picture and I just had to get this of my heart. I think you have talent and especially the motivation, but there could be al lot of improvement if you focused on getting the emotion down and the expressions..
well goodbye,
Jairo
