View Full Version : Woman with Mask
Hi. Here's something I did mostly in Painter with a little Photoshop. It started as a sketch of a face and developed into this image. I'm still trying to learn both programs, so c&c is very welcome.
Thanks

The face seems pretty good and I like what's going on with the outfit. I think you need to ditch the black line work on the outfit, though. It's almost like there's two different conflicting painting styles going on between her clothing and her face.
I had a hard time reading the hand holding up the mask, at first I thought her fingers were part of the mask. I think a secondary light source on the left side of the painting might help with that a little. On my monitor, the left side is almost completely black and most of the detail of the figure is lost.
Other things I noticed:
Maybe add a few more pronounced highlights to her hair, especially the right side(maybe some of the light orange/green from the background)
The perspective on the window/hole in the wall seems a little off...I'm not sure you'd see the top and the bottom of the opening(hope you understand what I mean by that)
What's that guy in the back so smiley about, anyhow?:D
Hope that c&c helps a bit:p

maybe he's spying on her... gasp! pervert! okok... erm... adding on to what wildsheepchase said, I think the bg can use some planning... Somehow, it looks strange... out of place...
but its good painting for one who is still learning! hehe... carry on learning man! and they will become your very good friends in the future! :D
Thanks for the crits!
Sheepchase:
I'm trying to get a more painterly style going. Problem is I have trouble getting the definition I want, hence the black lines on the outfit. I'm still trying to work it out.
I did the painting on one computer and then posted it using another. On the computer I used to make the picture, the image is a lot lighter. There are lots of grey highlights in the hair. So I'm not sure if the problem is with the actual image or if the gamma on my computer is off or something. I'll check it out.
The perspective on the wall opening--I was thinking that the opening on the other side of the wall is smaller than on the inside. But if it looks weird, maybe I'll rethink it.

Lol. Yeah, I think I was going for a feeling like that. But I guess there's cool out-of-placeness and then there's inept out-of-placeness. Maybe this is too much in the latter category.
Ok. I recalibrated my monitor and did a lot of tinkering with contrast, color balance and whatnot, so I hope this looks better. I also added more of a secondary light source on the left and smoothed the whole thing out with the water tool to get rid of the black lines.
I don't know what I'm going to do with the background yet, so I just left it blurred out.
Thoughts?

The only thing missing is shadows... It's kind of unnerving to see every nook and cranny of her uniform lit separately. It would vastly improve the composition and mood to start with broad color splashes indicating overall lighting and then adding detail.
Good work. :)

Hey! It's getting better. The style of the whole piece looks more cohesive now and the hand looks a lot better. The hair is also looking better, though I still think you could maybe be more bold with the highlights on the right side of the head. I'd like to maybe see some more shadows on the left side of her nose and around the eyes to define the eye shape more. It's looking really good though:thumbsup:
Are you going to leave the background as it is?
Neo85: Thanks!
loganx3d: I think I know what you mean. I actually did do a very loose splashy layer to start with, but I wanted the curved surfaces of the outfit to pop, so the recesses got darker with subsequent layers of painting. I'll keep your advice in mind for the future. Thanks.
wildsheepchase: I'm working on an update that adds more highlights and shadows. I'm still not sure what I'm going to do with the background.

Lookin Good!!
I'd just soften the shading on the nose, it looks a bit too defined.
The background could use some work as well, perhaps make more plain to bring the woman out.
thanks for the comments everyone.
Ok, here's another update. The solution to my background problem is a bit cheesy, but it seems to pop the figure out so what the hell.
Unfortunately, the computer I use to post will only attach image files if they are under 40k, so the image online is a bit rougher than the original.

i actually love the look. the drawing is great!! the paint is not my style per say, but it has a handdrawn look, when i first saw it, i thought it was hand colored. :)
very nice.
