I have a mesh with several smoothing groups each one of them with a bitmap material.
Can i apply planar, face, box, spherical, etc, on the uvw modifier to each of the mesh smoothing groups?
I mean, i need a planar uvw on one smoothing group and a face uvw on another. Is it possible?

yes, it is. select the faces or the polys you want to map with a specific method, apply an uvw modifier and place the texture. when ready, collapde to e-poly or e-mesh, select the next faces, apply uvw modifier, collapse again and so on and so on...

You don't even have to collapse the stack each time you map a section, if you don't want to. Just add an edit mesh or edit poly modifier, make the sub-object selection, then add a unwrapUVW modifier on top of it. Just continue with more edit mesh/poly and unwrapUVW modifiers for new sub-object selections. This way you can go back and tweak each section if you need to.

When you are completely finished mapping you should save out a backup copy (in case you need to tweak a section later) then collapse the stack and convert to editable mesh. Editable mesh is faster in the viewport than an editable poly.
