Can you be more specific, as in if you are using Software render or Mental Ray?...plus, any info on any "make pretty" functions of Mental Ray you may be using. That will help the forum users to help you. D-map shadows act very differently depending on what renderer you are using.

Try using the D map shadow settings in the Mental Ray tab of the lights attribute editor. The samples need to be very high (100 or so) to get rid of the noise in the shadow...then you MIGHT be able to get those cracks to shadow correctly by adjusting the softness and bias. Maya 7 has a new "detail shadow map" tab, that might work? A dome set up like that with D map shadows will just blur the shadow over those tiny cracks. They would most likely need to be ray-traced shadows, but then you have a bunch of shadow edges or very long render times. FG would give you look you want pretty easily.
