Hi Glitchwolf,

Not really sure what you problem is. I just then made a sphere, checked "Slice on" check box and then adjusted either the "Slice From" or "Slice To" spinners. After that I coverted it to an EPoly and got the same thing as that screen shot. This was in max 5, I assume 4 is the same.

hmmm, ok, can I assume that you can at least make a sphere, if so then in the modifer panel, with the sphere selected you will see all the text that I talked about in my last post, just play a little.

If not, then may I surgest starting at the very top of the tutorials and working your way through them

One more stupid question, how do you do mesh select in MAX 5? I have tried everything looked everywhere. I want to be able to select polys in a Epoly andmesh smooth only them (yes I am newb). I just need a point in the right direction, please tell me if I am not clear.

Glitch, the easiest thing for you to do, is to drop Max, and get Lightwave, and a Dan Ablan book.

LOL, thanks, but I got the hang of MAX, I just dont know where some things are. But maybe I should try lightwave.

Man, if I can learn LW, anyone can... start with 5.6 for a super-simple-break-the-ice relationship, then after a month or so, jump into the latest version.

(I use LW, and Maya, and I am prof Max trained as well... I've got a good basis for comparison)

Thanks but I think I will stick with MAX, its seems to be a very well attuned program, and its easy to learn, and most of my knowledge base circles around MAX, but hey maybe one day ill take you LW.

why nobody ever read tutorials and help files provided with programs? I found MAX help files very helpfull in such rather simple problems.....

You select the "select mesh" modifier and after selecting the polys you want to meshsmooth use the "meshsmooth" modifier, But without closing the select mesh modifier first..Ie leave the polygon level yellow...Play around with it and youll understand how it works..You can also do this with a "mesh edit" modifier if you already have one open.

Oh man thats ingenioius....You found the holy grail..how could this have gone unseen all theese years..

:D

Ok..that was a bit sarcastic (or how it's spelled). But 99% of all newbie questions qould be avoided by pressing "F1" and type your function in question into the search function. And there you would get the best answer to your question to, as it is actually those who made the program! that gives you the answer.

And to you Glitchwolf this was meant to all the "i'm a newbie: HELP.." qustions not only yours. So not take it personally, your question is not too easy to find a solution to. You just have to learn what the differnt modifiers do. Look through them and use ther reference on each one. Then you will have a solid base on how to work with max.

And for the how to: Use meshselect (Use the reference to find out how it works), then apply a Tesselate (Use the reference to find out how it works) to your selection. And there you go.

And even easier; Since you already are in edit poly mode. Select the polys that you need more ploys on and press the tesselate button in the submenu of edit poly.

Cheers!

I always thought that tesselate just subdivided but didnt actually meshsmooth.
