View Full Version : Fit Deformation - almost got it! Help.

I am new to MAX and am bending my mind trying to make fit deformation work. It is a simple object (rectangle) with rounded edges and a slight slanting side.

I created the shapes Fit X (top) and Fit Y (side) (X and Y same length) and then a cross section (front) and a straight line for the path.

I loft the cross section along the path and the choose deform fit. Turn Symmetrical off and choose X and then Y and then generate path.

After the fit deformation I get this strange lip at the top on the sides.

It is so close!? Please help. I can e-mail max file.

Thanx,
Newbie Mellow

No help for the newbie!? Where are the gurus when you need them?

Anyone that can help with fit deform?

Waiting with hope.

well i'm not sure about the fit deform but from the look of the image you posted you might be a bit better off simply using a taper modifier, which could also give you the same sort of shape...

although other then that you might try increasing the steps of the splines of your fit shapes and see if the little lip shows up then (thinking perhaps the steps are low and you just can't see the lip that is actually there) and if so you can then fix it. otherwise my only other guess is that the lip is just a result of interpolation between shapes or something like that which is a result of it being a loft object...

but i'd go with the taper modifier or a FFD modifier if i were you...just easier on the ol brain ;)

hope this helps a bit :)

I thank you for your help. I tried the suggested taper modifier and that works great for the tapered sides so I guess the only problem I have is the rounded edges.

Now I can draw a rectangle and then add a radius on the corners, extrude and then taper but the radius is only on two of the four sides. I clone this and rotate 90 degrees and then use boolean... messy is there a better way to get rid of that hard computer edges before I taper.

PS your demo reel is Kicks!

well i guess it really depends on the shape you are going for, but an easy way to get softer edges, would be to covert to an editable poly. then select the edges you want to be softer and then chamfer them. 1 or 2 chamfers should give you a nice round edge, although you will probably have to adjust your smoothing groups so they don't look faceted :)
