Here is my latest work... before anyone ask: i used some "Star Wars" movies for reference ;) But the creature has itīs own personality - i hope !!

great work man. maybe you could ad some muscle deformation in the cheek area for the different expressions, i think he will then have a lot more expression in it.

Wow. This little creature has got a lot of character. Maybe you could put eyebrows on him to emphasis his brow expressions. Heh, I can't stop staring at him.

Hey Bassit - this little guy is awesome. Extremely cute yet menacing too. You know, I think this guy looks like he belongs in a movie! He really is very very cool. Great work!
The only crit I can give is that I think his mouth needs a bit of work - I'm not sure what it is about it that bugs me, it just doesn't seem to look right. Otherwise, brilliant character!

First of all: thanks for the comments & compliments ! That gives me a lot of power to go further.
DWIEMER: I will try to add some more muscles... maybe it brings more life to him !
somlor: You could be right: the area above the eyes could really need some detail ! But i am not sure if he will loose his cutiness if i give him some bushy brows... but iīll try something ;)
Leigh: Yes, there is something wrong with that mouth... but i dont know what ! Maybe i should change the color of his lips ?!
Anyway iīm actually thinking about what body would fit this little thing... a two-legged human-like or a four-legged pet-body ? Any ideas or suggestions are welcome !!

maybe you could give him 3 legs, 2 in the front, 1 thicker leg in the back.

Suggestions on the mouth: It looks like it's stuck on the head - almost like a beak.
Maybe bring the chin forward?
Maybe less of an indent under the nose?
It looks like a cat - maybe try a cat-like mouth?
Cool creature. Cute yet kinda scary. Like those little dinosaurs in Jurassic 2 that were in packs and would swarm their prey.
Again - just suggestions. I would be happy with anything near this!!:)

Funny!!! Cute and still scary. With the wiskers he looks like a mouse/cat hybrid genetically engineered on the x-files. Give him a furry tail with retractable claws and you'll be all set! :D

Iīve played around with the lightning... thanks maya_death, for that hint...
As you can see iīve completely redone the iris (much higher resolution) - i will also raise the resolution of the head-textures to add some little details ;)
Oh, before i forgot: That furry tail and some retractable claws seems to be a great idea - i will defenitly add them :D Especially that fur would be a challenge for me - iīve never done this before.

Iīve made a blocky body for this creature... thatīs the shape he should look like !
It would be great to get some comments because itīs the second human-like body iīve ever created ;) , so i really need some critique.

Just the overall shape of the head and the ears protruding off the sides reminded me of it. I didn't mean any offense by anything I said in the previous post.

Sorry kyphur, i donīt wanted to sound harsh... as mentioned in the start-post iīve used mostly "Star Wars - Episode 1" for reference. And the inspiration for the ears came from an old C=64 game called "C.R.E.A.T.U.R.E" by Thalamus... maybe someone know this oldie (but goldie) - and that "creature" game where you teach him things and that stuff - here is a pic of that little cutie ;)

I thought he is sometimes lonely, so i am actually thinking of creating a female ! So i just started to make the opposite gender and hereīs the render ;) . . .

First of all i really like the head, but to me he must have an other kind of body, much smaller, compacter and a little fatter; or the head a lot smaller. Or is he having wider clothes?
Maybe you could exrerate some parts like his muscles and tail (make some characteristics more there, bigger)
Just some thoughts.

Raul-Reznek: Thanks, these are the first hands i ever created and i wasnīt really satisfied with them - but if you think they are good, i will keep them.
DWIEMER: Youīre right ! I wasnīt sure of the body, because i modelled too long on it. Thanks for saying what i thought ;) I will keep these bodies for another creature...
Iīve made a snapshot a while ago during a tv-show here in good old germany - itīs attached !
Maybe this kind of body would fit much better !?! What do you think ?

the head somehow reminds me of a muscled cat body with a devils tale with many big muscles. maybe the horns on his back or copletely with fur.

DWIEMER: i am still not sure what kind of body he will get, but these things have to be in: hands (for grabbing something and pointing on things and so on), claws (that comes out of his hands - will add a sketch later today), a tail (just for fun) and horns in tha backbone... What do you mean with "devils tale" ?
Oh, and iīve dropped that fur, because itīs hard to realize without an expensive plugin. I tried to scatter the hair but it let my mesh look strange in the viewports !? And itīs also not a good result :(
Geckopunk83: A bat ? Mmmh... havenīt thought of that. But according to things that i want to be added (hands, claws, a tail and back-bone-horns) iīve to choose a larger body... But wings !!?! Well, that could be interesting and funny - will think about it !

Added some early wings and defined the muscles some more... heīs also no longer nude ;) And he has got some foots with wich he is able to grab something (or someone *hehe*) But take a look for yourself !

Thanks DWIEMER ! I have played around with the head-size and yes, you were right: it looks much better with a smaller head !
I will post some renders after iīve finished the wings... donīt know if i should use a sim-cloth-mesh or model them ?!

Love the eyes...the skin texture seems a bit like stone though (maybe drop back the bump on the closeup?)..overall very well done. Kind of a cutesy creature but looks like it could open a can o whoop arse as well. ;)

I really like what you've done with the body. Very slick and streamlined.
I think you should incorporate some of the hard lines and pointy parts of the body to the head. Maybe continue the pointy spine things to the top of the head? The head just seems too smooth and big to match the body. I'm not saying that either one is bad ... just doesnt match IMO.

NukleoN: The bump will be changed soon - i will also add some wrinkles around the mouth and eyes.
rondo: Yeah, iīve resized the head and hope to get more detail with some bump-mapping... and the pointy spine things will be continue some more in the neck (to the head).
I will post as soon as i get rid of those damn wings - but i think tomorrow it will be done (hopefully) !

Puh - iīve finally made all the needed bones ! Exactly there are 84 bones - and because this is my very first character rigging job i am not sure if i made too much or too less of them ! Any suggestions ?
Another prob is that the tail needs some other IK-solver settings than the default. Only the pre-last bone moves i move the last one ! But i want the whole tail to follow the last bone - any hints ?
Ouch, if it's your first character, you have way too many bones dude! Have you set up all the ik and the constraints? if you did, great job...if you did not...optimise! Otherwise, you will get really pissed with 3D Max's bones!

Thanks echo, but where should i remove bones ? To animate a single finger i will need three bones, right ? Maybe i should steal him 2 fingers from each hand ;) Iīve set up nearly all the ik and the constraints, but i canīt make them work the way they should :( !
Is there a good tutorial out there ?!?
I have tried to apply the skin-modifier, but there are a lot of vertices that are not correctly attached... so iīve started now to redefine the bones (adding fins) so that they fill out the skin perfectly and then i start painting the rest of the vertices - hope thatīs the right way...
I think thatīs the worst part of a character-creation. But i wanna set him in a pose... and maybe animate him for a short short-movie ;)

I know i have to tweak the keys between the blend-morphs, but do you think there is something more to change ?! I donīt know, but the lips moves a little strange or i have watched it too often *g*

Where to remove bones, that`s the question! :D
Ask yourself these questions..considering that this is your very first rig : Will you animate all the fingers individually? How will you move the torso, do you need 3 bones or would 2 be ok? I also doubt that you will animate all his toes individually. Look at the tail..could you replace the bones by affecting a modifier instead ?
These are the questions you need to ask yourself...
What need to be animated and what is really just optinal?
Only you can decide of that ;)

ŧ Yes echo, i thought about that a while... i will store that sceleton and go back to it if i am comfortable with rigging and setting up everything. So i decided to reduce the bones in the feet - that grabbing-feature will have to wait ;) The hands definitely need those bones - i think that makes him more believable ! Maybe i will just flex the ears, but i think i could need them for better expressions.

Itīs easier than i thought to paint the weights :D There are a lot to paint (wings, shoulders and fingers) but i think a get a feeling for it.
