I don't have much experience in charging for animation, but a project has come up which might land, and I need to give them a quote:

...that said, assuming a person of proficient ability (not in L.A., but in Memphis where there are not a whole lot of 3d peeps floating around) and a normal turn-around time, would some of you give me an idea of how much you would charge for the following: (these are the cliet's parameters and description)

10 second photo-real animation takes place under water

You are a water particle and the camera-view is always your perspective. There are sand particles swirling around you as you move through a pipe-like waterway, travel through a steel mesh grid, take a 90 degree angle up another pipe and pass through a turbine fan (not sure about how complicated that model is yet), and then fade to black.

So modeling and texturing would include:
Water
Sand
Steel Mesh
Pipes
Turbine

Animation/Lighting would include what I've described.

If you have ideas of what you would charge for something like, it be great to hear from you.

Thanks,
Mahlon Bouldin

1000 USD. No more no less, that would take quite some time. Good luck. And factor in render time in there.

US $1000..... I don't know. I work in Australia... but

He has never done work for a client before.

Its sound like a project that doesn't need low-level animation (i.e. keyframing). Sounds like a great project for a first client. You could probably finish a mock up with the quote to attract them it sounds that easy. Everything can be done through Simulation.... Particled water, bubbles. Spline/Path animate camera. I see a "Fight Club" brain sequence myself (only travelling forwards).

Something that simple could be done in 2 days and majority of the time would be placed in rendering.

10 second photo-real animation takes place under water

Raytrace and Refraction.... if you have Brazil.... I'd go with some radiosity too.

Download the DarkTree shader plugin for 3dsmax 3, 4 or 5. Its free. You can get great instant tweakable procedule textures, for rusty/dirty metals, beautiful water textures, a great sand texture. They all come in one zip file.
