have other way to do it?

In Maya 4.5 you can use: hold ctrl + left click on one of the axes of the scalemanipulator and drag. Now you can scale over the other two axes.
Previous versions of Maya don't have such a feature.
The only way I know is to lock one of the directions in the channelbox.
