View Full Version : Lighting: how can I obtain this effect?
insanelight 11-15-2002, 12:48 PM Hi!
I have a little question: what I have to do to obtain the soft glow effect like this image:
http://www.discreet.com/images/products/3dsmax/3dsmax5_beta/hi-res/3dsmax5beta_image29.jpg
I use MAX 5 + Brazil 1.0
What kind of light I must use? Parameters? What is the correct name of this lighting effect?
I hope to find here my answers ;)
Thanks a lot,

looks to me like just a spot light with a setting over 1.0 like say 1.6, and a few other lights to fill in, or perhaps rad or skylight, but I think  that its default render. Try setting up a spotlight with intensity 1.6 or so. :) good lick

theres a script that comes with 3dsmax called"RenderEffect- SpecularBloom", give that a go, but generally i would do this in post

insanelight, this is just a blur render effect on the highlight. Give it a try, you will see it's easy and so nice ,-) Add blur in render effect, go into pixel selection, and then adjust the luminance value.

no no no... that's not just one intense spotlight. It's called a good lighting setup... and I'm sure the specular bloom/blur was done in post. And since it's max 5 I'm sure there was some GI mixed in for a tasty dish.
Serve nice and hot.
[edit] Kib is right... easily done with the render effect also.

You might also want to check out the material. Not any mat will work with this lighting situation. You need to have something with a low specualr level. So just remeber the mat counts too.
