Title: Hoi
Name: Menno Van Opheusden
Country: Netherlands
Software: Painter

This was done using Painter 6's digital airbrush.
Not drawn after a single photograph, but I did study a lot of photos (for anatomy etc.)

My initial idea was a dark background like in those classical portraits, but it wouldn't work out so I decided to go for an outdoor scene instead. (I hope I didn't up the contrast too much, btw.)

Anyway, all comments are very welcome and thanks for viewing.

Body proportions are a bit odd, but you are an excellent artist

Agreed on the proportions, but other than that it's a fantastic image :applause:
Front page stuff if ask me.

Your choice of colours is excellent, looks very photographic, great work. ;)

Anatomy needs a lot of work I'd say, she ended up looking twisted in some places, heheh. Looks like a good rendering exercise though, colours are great but she floats out of place in some area's.

Beautifully painted. Realistic skin tones, allthough her head looks too big and there are some other anatomy problems as the others mentioned.

Nice work!

This is beautiful. He head is big but some people have normal sized heads on petit bodies but the kicker is her hands are big too. The hands throw off the proportions the most, I think.

An example of big head and petit body is Giada De Laurentiis on her cooking show "Everyday Italian". Be that as it may she's still way hot.

Awesome work.

It almost looks like a 3D model instead of a 2D which tells me your shadowing and high-lighting is extremely well executed.

Well Done

Hello there,
The textures are really well done. Skin , hair , eyes , BEAUTIFUL!!!.
Just be a bit careful about proportions. Head and hands are a little too big and the arm on the right looks short...Your next painting will be perfect!

Your render is superb, but I agree about the proportions. Her left arm, and shoulder look strange too. There are no folds in the skin where they meet, or something. Reminds me of an old barbie arm. Other than the few problem areas it's really good. The render is fantastic. :)

Amazing!! I love this image, keep up the great work!

And yeah I think these proportions aren't the mos flattering there are, but she doesn't have to be a super model, the're tons of people with weirder proportions, really.

Do you have more of your paintings somewhere to see?

Thanks for all your replies everyone.

I suppose if you work on an image for sometime you start to overlook the obvious flaws. It's pretty easy to fix so next time I'll be sure to post under work in progress first.

As others have mentioned, the head is a little big.
That aside though, the choice of colors and shading is extremely good. The hair is especially nice. :)
Very good work.

Looks like a Poser rendering with overpaint...but not bad....

i apologize in advance but...how do these mediocre misc. airbrushed chicks keep making the front page? i'm honestly curious!

*edit:

as for the actual painting, i really don't have that much of a problem with it. my main suggestion would be to explore the vast amount of brushes painter has to offer...this one looks like it was painted with the default photoshop brush at 50% hardness.

The good use of colour, the lighting, the technique of expressing the character. This is a fantastic piece of work. I love it so much.

Weird body proportions, a little bit blurry technique, but nice hair and skin colors (except the over-highlighted right side). Overall not excellent, but not bad. Keep it up! :)

the head and hands seem a little large, did you work from a photograph? It could have been the lens distortion (the camera can lie). You definitely avoided the "made with a computer" look! Nice work.

Good job. A lot of people have mentioned the proportions... for what it's worth, I actually like that they're not perfect -- makes the painting more interesting. But if you were going for realism though, then I guess you may want to fix that.

This is very good for a first post and there are things to recommend it such as the way that the traslucency of the clothing is handled but I have to agree that I was a little surprised to see it on the front page.

Aside from the size of the head, there are other areas like the waist that could be looked at.

Also, the lighting is not as coherent as it could be. Especially around the cheek and jaw. I think I can see that the jaw line has been re-done somewhat or something as there is a colour difference there.

The nose is a little inset into the head mass. Also, I find the shading rather too blurred in an in-decisive kind of way. There could be more of a play between soft and hard.

You have talent and can be sucessfull and I'm not saying I can do any better, but I just think that a little more work is needed before this gets onto the front page. I wouldn't have botherd criting the image if I didn't think you were worth it.

This is a really difficult kind of thing to pull off and you are 80 the way there which is pretty impressive.

The Head is really too big. If you skrink it down I think the antomy would clean up like 80%, Your skill with digital painting is a 100 without a doubt. Try attending some life drawing class and you will be one of the top digital painters around.

Looks super nice, but proportions looks a bit weird: hands, head looks big compared to the body....
Wonderfull indeed...

Good rendering, yes... but wrong proportions, weak figure building, and odd posing feeling. You should work a lot on drawing, to get the level you show when painting.

Sorry, but I don't think this work deserves to be on frontpage.

10-27-2005, 12:12 AM
Head looks a bit large, but then again I've met people in real life where I've said to myself, "Head looks a bit...large." Undeniably a grade A+ piece :)

When I saw this I thought it was very cool. I thought that the proportions were done like that on purpose to give it a cartoon look. Was I wrong? Regardless, the pic has some excellent qualities, nice use of colour.

'Ook 'hoi' Menno ;)'

Wow Menno! That's really amazing stuff! :scream: The skintones are amazing, the lighting is amazing, the color is amazing...! Just 100% a wow-piece-of-art! :)

About the 'weird proportions': her face does me thing of a 'girl' of 12 years or so, while her body (well... especially the boobs ;) ) do look more like an older girl... But to me that 'weird' thingy, is a good thing, as it gives more character to the piece, and at the end there are people like her, and they may be looking just very sweet...! :)

Did you give the girl the look of the references you took...? Or is the girl in the painting really 'different'?

Have fun here on CGTalk.com (great place! ;) ) & Tons of good luck with future artwork! In every case you scored a very cool first post! :bounce:

Hi,
first:
-the image is perfectly photorealistic, at least to any untrained eye. The painting side of your work couldn't possibly be much better (I'd almost say not any better).

second: I STRONGLY suggest you go and draw a lot of live nudes at some local croquis class, or wherever you can. That will help you out of any problems you might still have with your art. The more the better. If you can get some drawing instruction to boot, you'll be surprised at what you can do and see after a few months.

Rendering is incredible in this painting. The people debating whether or not the head or hands are off are half right. They are both wrong, however they are correct in relation to one another. The hand should be about the same size as the face... which is mostly correct in this painting, it's just that... they're both off.

Also her back is broken around the third Lumbar. Something I find that tends to just snap proportions and poses into the proper relations is drawing the skeleton first. Rough out the skeletal structure and if the pose is wrong it'll be glaringly obvious, saves lots of time and heart ache in the long run.

This picture is well done, The proportions aren't that bad at all. Yeah, her head does look big but hey I've seen people with big heads. Anyway Her body does look proportional but from the angle it appears a Lil unnatural But thats what make the picture even more wonderful. If you stand like that against a wall and twist your body and move your leg as in the way she's standing, your waist would look thinner and your hips would look huge as well. Lovely picture shading is wonderful, I agree it does look 3d and in that case this is really phenomenal.

nevermind, I misinterpreted what someone said

Sequent
10-28-2005, 09:33 PM
"Get over it..." well, yeah, but on the other hand we do want to aim for a certain level of quality too, don't we?

I like this piece a lot in terms of the rendering and the use of color. But add me to the litany of those who think the head looks a little too big. Maybe it's because you used several photos for reference and the angles and proportions on those were different? I didn't think this looked necessarily like a poser special.

Probably a good idea to use a single model as overall reference.

Very well done!

Will you be making another image like this? I think some people will be less critical of your work once they see that this is your consistent style. I will give this artist the benefit of the doubt until proven otherwise.

Anyway congratulations for making it to the front page.

JM_JM

I am the skeptic.

I think that Sequent nailed it when they stated...
"Maybe it's because you used several photos for reference"...
I don’t believe that Sequent was saying that you painted over
an image that was a collage of images manipulated together...
But I am suspecting this.
Think about it. There are many paint overs in CG Society, and most of the time those people get called on it. Someone always responds to the post with an image found through a google search. So now paint-over-ists are combining photos into one image to paint over.

I don’t mind if things are painted over...Who cares. There is talent required for that. But its not the same kind of talent that can truly create a beautiful something from truly nothing.

If you Sketched/Painted this from nothing and used no photo to paint over...then I envy you, in a huge way.

If you are full of s#!t and just need instant gratification and attention with out desire for honesty and pride...I pity you.

I hope you are a great artist. You would be a giant source of inspiration.

I am not trying to offend anyone, I just hate being deceived.
Especially when I crave inspiration.

The left arm are twisted and way to short and also streched as in the joints are to thin. But other than that, it is an amazing portrait. It is going as a bg image for a while in school.
