Hey all, First post :p

I've been browsing these boards now for a while and finally decided to register.
Currently I am in my second year of a study called Game Design & Dev.

I've been working on this 3D model for a school assignment, it was to make a vehicle capable of driving, flying and move in water.
It had to be designed for a game with a max tri limit of 4500.

So I came up with a tank (everybody loves tanks) with 2 massive Harrier jump jets crammed to the sides, and 4 "legs" With massive shields, when contracted would form some sort of waterlily leaves. (no I wasnt drunk)

I wanted to go for the slightly cartoony look, and yes I was greatly inspired by the metal slug series. ;)

Well.. see for yourself.

The Leg idea.

The thing is, I wanna unwrap this puppy tonight (damn school deadlines)
so I can start texturing.
Xcpet the smoothing groupes are giving me a bother.. since the whole thing is armored and mechanical. the smoothing groupes look a bit off to me..

So I hope you guys n' gals can give me some opinions on this.

Thnx. Hope to hear some crits soon.

First off, groeten uit Holland ;)

Second, your robot looks really nice, it will probably look even better when it has a proper texture... But I'm not really sure about the railgun on the front, it looks kind of out of place... I can see some places where you might be able to save some polygons... Are you going to use a normal map on it?

...But I'm not really sure about the railgun on the front, it looks kind of out of place....

thats no railgun! now thats a chaingun :P

but yes it seems quite off... i think id go for a normal tank-cannon maybe just like the fat ones in metal slug, or maybe a looong slick one as used in Steel Batallion for example.

other than that, i think the body of it looks great.

Excellent! The design reminds me much more of the tachikoma/fuchikoma tanks from GitS rather than the Metal Gear vehicles. I assume the jets are not attached yet? I really like the design, very cool! Smoothing groups look good, though i'd try killing the seams on the big bar/pipe areas.

Thnx for the reply's and crit's People.

As said by HSI it's a minigun/gatling. I think the concept of a multiple barreled Gun is simply awesome, but I can see it doesn't seem to fall in favor

As for the polycount, the limit is 4500 tri's, i'm on 3811 now. I added some little doodad details just for the fun of it. true some can be removed but it's just there for the heck of it.
I haven't quite mastered the art of normal mapping yet.. so that's a no show. plus for school assignments it's just too much work in too little time.

I initially went for the metal slug type short Fat barrel, but it ended ip to be a little too.. Metal slug. So I tried the gatling wich gave it a different look, maybe i'll put up some variations tonight, to see wich ones look cooler.

I also wanted a big long ass Artillery Cannon, But it would limit the rotation of the Dome since the barrel would slam into the shields. :banghead:
Heck I'll try it for the fun of it.

Well the 2 Round things on the side reseble the Rolls royce engines of the Harrier. but to see that more clearly you'll have to wait until it is textured. It's gonna feature thos trademark harrier intake holes and colours.
Like so:

Good point on the bars i'll look into that. Thank you

I like it a lot Stinkfoot. Reminds me of a blend of different mecha. As for the gun, i agree it looks a little out of place. Maybe you could scale it down some keeping the length the same, and place it under the body area. Might even make two or three of them . Keep up the good work.

Those are not actually engines, they are just air intakes. All jets have them, its how jet engines get enough oxygen to fuel the reactions. The actual jets on the harrier are small, rotating vector nozzles attached to the main fuselage below the wings. I only asked initially because the way you described them I was expecting like big rotating Osprey engines or something :P Your approach is more subtle and cool, I think, I'd just increase the visibility of the nozzles.

Very cool design! As for the smoothing groups it's up to how you "see" the shape. WHere it should be sharp make it sharp, where it's not don't! You might want to adjust that before proceeding on to texturing. Either this will rock with some good textures!

Damn.. Osprey's are cool.. ow well too add those now.. perhaps in a next project :)

Jeah the Little vector nozzles are a tad unclear without textures, Warning stickers will help clearify that. gotta love warning stickers!

Maybe I'll fix those to be a tad clearer...

Thnx for the Reply. Good pointers on the smoothing groups, Applied them aswell.

Opinion time! Since The gattling doesn't score well here I decided to do some quicky's for another barrel

The Metal Slug style Short "fatso" Barrel.

It's funny, it stays in context
:D

The Steel battalion like "Recoil-pushes-you-half-a-mile-back-after-one-shot" Barrel.
http://www.xs4all.nl/~eminence/Vehicle/Alt02.jpg
Not really shure about this one. it kinda eliminates the cartoony and ditzyness of the model.

Plus it causes some major maneuverability Problems. :p

Well since the Base of the tank is done I started to unwrapping. Unwrapping is still a bit wonky for me, but I think I'm getting the hang of it...

Thanks again for all the reply's so far people.

I like the alt02 version gun. My only concern is how it's loaded and the close proximity to the pilot inside. It reminds me of the mobile fortresses from the new Appleseed. Have you thought about a mounted weapon as opposed to a fixed weapon? More like a barrel that is mounted on the top of the vehicle and can be removed/replaced with different weapons depending on what is needed. Anyhow, keep up the progess, it's coming along nicely.

This time around it makes my stomach tingle... Good job!

Oh, and I guess my lack of weapon knowledge shows ;)

Wow I definitely love the design this ship has, really creative work! It somehow reminds me of the defiler in Warhammer 40k Dawn of War. Did you get inspiration from that game? If not, have a look at it, it really seems to fit with what you're trying to create.

keep it up! I'll be following the progress!

Jeah, piloting this thing isn't the most comfortable thing, I didn't design it with the cokpit in mind actually.:hmm:
Alt 02 eh?
It Looks cool the big gun, but it doesn't fit in the picture IMO.
I'll make a long barreled version as well just for the fun of it..

I'd Love to hear more opinions on the gun, I wanna finalize it tonight after work, so I can start texturing.

Thnx Armanguy :)

Wich one? the fat barrel or the gigantic barrel? :p

Thnx for the comment, Tho I have looked at some tanks from warhammer voor the overall Clunky-ness of the designs, I have to admit I haven't looked at the defiler... even though that is a very good reference now that I think of it.

Slight Update on unwrapping.
Unwrapped the Complete body, xcept for gun, since I'm not quite sure about it. and 1 of the legs. (god bless copy, paste)

Due to time constraints this isn't my cleanest unwrap ever. there's is a slight stretch in certain places but only minimal. looks clean for the most part (I think)

The assignment allows for 3 512x512 textures, But i'm rooting for 2.

Thnx for all the positive reply so far people. Keep them crits coming.

looking really sweet, i love the vehicle design aswell, so much stuff out there is done for purely aesthetic reasons, its nice to see sometghing thats really been thought out. i did something alittle like this a while ago, i will post a thread Called Spider Tank so you can see.

I like the big gun but it will use alot of texture space which is a real consideration with something like this, maybe something slightly smaller, with one of those rubber seals/hydraulic things at the base.

cant wait to see it textured, i did mine a while ago and didnt spend enough time on it.

I loved the design from the start. Will be fun to see this one completed. I actually liked the gatling gun :-P Second choice would be the fatso one ^^ Are you going to create a nromal or bumpmap for it?

Thnx for the comment, anxious to see your idea of a spider tank.

Jeah I actually decided to go for the minigun, tho I will make the other big barrel once the model's finished.
Due to time contraints I wont be normal mapping it. maybe add a bump map for refined detail.
But since normalmapping isn't quite in my fingers yet I'll have to pass on that this time.

Slight update:

Unwrapping is complete. I changed the barre of the minigun slightly, making it a tad more realistic. it's a bit longer now. and also the barrels are slightly converging as seen on some goalkeeper miniguns on fregats.

http://www.xs4all.nl/~eminence/Vehicle/50done_01.jpg
As seen here.
http://www.xs4all.nl/~eminence/Vehicle/50done_02.jpg

and here

http://www.xs4all.nl/~eminence/Vehicle/50done_03.jpg

I personally like the new barrel it's a tad less clunky and cartoony but the added length and slightly scaled down size make feel better.

Go nuts!

--UPDATE--

here's the water mode i mentioned, the legs contract and the shields (should) provide enough counter force to keep the thing afloat.

Off course the real thing would sink to the bottom, but hey I flunked Physics and it's purely cosmetic. and sci-fi (that's always a good excuse)

http://www.xs4all.nl/~eminence/Vehicle/Floatmode.jpg
I came up with the idea when I was in my garden watching waterlily's and thinking:

"those would make one heck of a turret"

SHEPEIRO

ithe spider tanks posted.

dont think this model needs a normal map, at least not one generated from high poly. it would be more trouble than its worth. but you could use you bump map to generate a quick normal map in PS with the nvidia filter.

cant wait to see the texture.

Hey here's the latest update.
So I finished texturing this thing, and considering the time I had I am overall satisfied with the result. ( had to paint this damn thing in half a day, :wise: "next time start early-er on your school work Martijn"... jeah right)

Still Thinking about redoing the texture in my free time.. but since "free time" has become a rare statement these days I'm thinking of sticking with it...it was a good lesson overall.

http://www.xs4all.nl/~eminence/Vehicle/Land01.jpg
(omg the gross skylight render :)
http://www.xs4all.nl/~eminence/Vehicle/Land02.jpg

The texture features 2x512 and this is my first real attempt at photoshopping a texture (be gentle)

Some Guy in my class insisted on using a bumpmap, so I added a one.. but Thinking of dumping that.. it adds some nice effect in some places.

the texture's pretty cliche but since the teacher digged the warning marks and stickers I just stuck to that :)

One to the next school block!

wow, this thing is sweet.
Try to add some small panel lines in the diffuse and bump map to break up he surface a little bit, a little dirt on the edges would be great to.

cool design and a great model...but to be honest i liked the giant tank cannon better than the chain gun :D

Jeah I liked the whole big long armored core gun aswell. but time didn't permit me to make it..

Maybe I'll finalize the texture if there are any more requests..

if you want to add a quick layer of dirt, pooh.

render to texture with th light tracer turned on, with quite high quality, (oh and simple white material assigned), and a gradient spherical environemnt sky light. then use this map in photoshop as a pattern brush, just draw in greasy dirt and dark bits on a miultiplied layer( plus add another 2 pasted layers of the light map, one as oberlay about 30% opacity and another as multiply at 50% op, for lighting), its a reall quick way of adding layers of light and dirt.

you can also use pattern brushed light map to add scratches on exposed parts by drawing in on a screen or lighten layer.

always render out a light map, if you dont use it directly, it can be a real help when drawing your map.
