This is my starting point. It's a very quick sketch of the image I have in my mind: A big spaceship full of lights breaks the speed limits; two italian police officers check its driver, a strange alien, as they usually do in these cases...

I try to find the right point of view and the right position of the characters and of the vehicles. I'm looking for a very imposing shoot. The spaceship has to look wonderfull, beautifull and dangerous

I start to think about the design of the spaceship. I like this shot. For now, I'll work on it

I like your concept. Maybe you could do skid marks on the road weaving back and forth, so it looks like the alien was driving drunk. Good work.

Your advice is very interesting, but maybe I can put some speed limit signal back and forth, because I don't think the alien is really drunk...I have to think about it...Thanks again.

Advice about cops from my country? Make at least one of them FAT! I'm not necessarily suggesting that they all are, however, its a funny popular stereotype that cops in this country are fat and like to eat donuts.

If you model this guy, I'll be SO HAPPY!

http://www.kellie.de/pics/fm3/justonedate2.jpg

This man starred in Family Matters, a popular tv show last decade. He also played a role as a cop in die hard. He'll be someone fun for you to caricature and I'm sure a ton of people will recognize him.

Some more pictures of him for ref can be found here (http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.kellie.de/fm1/fm_reg3.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.kellie.de/foto_fm3.htm&h=390&w=210&sz=14&tbnid=IiBkjSQ5ldYJ:&tbnh=120&tbnw=64&hl=en&start=2&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dcarl%2Bwinslow%26svnum%3D10%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-US:official%26sa%3DN)

Hope that helps. Nice job so far!

Yippee! I'm glad to hear this! I think a tall and skinny white cop will be well complimented by a short and fat black cop. This serves to show the diversity of the people in America and it just works well in a aesthetic sense. I'm sure this will turn out very cool with your style of modeling!

Boy, I sure have come to this thread a little too late. Your idea kind of reminds me of Futurama – It has that same kind of attitude.:buttrock:

That looks like a difficult lighting situation. Perhaps you could have some light from the sirens hitting the under side of the space ship. You could also adjust the rim light from the moon to isolate the top of the ship from the background. The space ship has some nice details; I hope you are able to reclaim them.:)

great piece, a lot of style, character, and fun. i'm really digging it.

what about relying on the ship's self-illumination as much as possible? having all the little tiny lights on the ship lighting itself may solve your issues. it would also give the ship a greater sense of scale, which may help.

i also think the angle of the police car is a little weird. if you're going for a routine pullover feel i'd have the black and white simply pulled over to the side of the road. when it's at an angle like that it looks like they came to a screeching halt after a high-speed chase.

hope that helps.

cheers,

I made the first rendering of the cops. Unfortunately, I realized that I have troubles with memory limits, so I'll made all the final rendering in a not so high resolution (approx 2600 high x 1800 wide).

Nice concept! really funny.
I think it would have been funny to have a more contrasted look between the 2 cops, I mean for example a shorter and fatter black cop.
You should work a bit more on the texture/shaders and lighting
What do you think?

Hi fellows!

Jose Pardo: thanks my friend! Your words really make me happy, especially after I saw your spectacular 2D entry that I consider simply wonderful!!!

SILMAETH: Sure, I was going to make the black cop shorter and fatter, but I had no time so I modified the mesh of the other cop's body...this is the reason because they're not so different. Sure, I think you're right about texturing and lighting and I'm going to adjust these aspects in these hours. Can you give me some suggestions about the road and the ground textures? Or any advice about lighting in general? Thanks!

In first, thanks for your comments on my thread Marco, very kind...

Just discovering your project... I read the good evolving of you creation... great drawing skills and very funny stuffs here...

I come now with some clear eyes, and if I can say something about the last update, the first thing which jump to my eyes is the aliens clothe... that seem for me a little bit too much plastic, too shiny... maybe something more as rubber will be better... or adjusting the specular and adding very little procedural map... to catch more shadows and light, and transcribe more the shape of this alien...

About the design of the cops... nothing to crit, maybe the pants are so much straight... Their shoes appear very glossy... yes, it's possible, but very rare for the sole part... (I know, it's not the real life... but the "spectators" have always "our" references...).
Always around the foot... these guys are enlightened by some lights, not... that's appear a little bit poor on shadows at this shoes part... that give us antransition very hard between the ground and the foot.

Always about trenasition... the one between the road and the ground... too much clean and clear... no reliefs, no pebbles, no duts... that can enriched this part...

Remaining parts are perfect for me... I love the ship... and I appreciate a lot the alien head... very beautiful on the close rendering, few page before.

Well...best wishes for finishing your Spectacular entry, and good luck Marco

At each level, we have lot of to learn... it's the principal interest in these challenge... that's make me happy each time...
I just profit of this post to point you 3 another little things for the police car...
- tires appear very clean... then more dusty... more rubber and less oily...
- and the "avoid-shock" (para-scossa ?) maybe need some chrome... and eventually little chocks and/or rust...
- that can be good to see the ray light of the car light...
- the grill is rather simple, it doesn't have there a grid, it has there the possibility of cheated and to gain in the details without too much work, by adding these bars of protections which we often finds in front of these vehicles of police force. It are often black... I hope you see what I mean...

That all for now... family time now  e buena sera Marco:beer:

at first I thought the alien was floating because the left foot's shadow is directly below the right foot; then I saw the right foot's shadow... optical illusion I guess. I love the cops but specially the white cop's expression. I also have a tiny nitpick; the white cop almost looks like he's smoking a pipe when it is just a piece of the UFO. I would rotate the ship a little to move that piece of the ship. Consider rotating the ship a bit to put that part of it behind the cop, just a thought.

your model and te spaceship are really nice, really funny picture!
personaly i prefer the previous concept in witch we see the giant spaceship and the scene with the policeman and alien really in the bottom in little size, it did a nice scale effect to your picture , more spectacular i think.
good job

Thanks for the advice friends!

SNoWs: Yes, I see it now! You're right, it seems the white cop is smoking something! I can't rotate the ship, but I think I can isolate the cop from the shop with a red rimm light to the white cop too and some blur on the ship (and maybe I can erase the pipe behind). Thanks for your words!

kingfish3d:I agree with you, in the first sketch the whole scene was more spectacular, but I like more this camera point of view because it remarks the silly side of the story. Thank you!

I made this work thinking about the incapacity that sometimes people have to recognize the wonder around us; It's like that some people are unamenable to the great things of our world.
And sometimes great things are tiny and very common in life. Maybe we lost every enthusiasm, or someone is trying to make us loosing it. And most of us start being sceptical as the policemen in my illustration. The idea came to me quickly; two policemen of a fake county of the U.S.A. are checking a "driver" and the alchool-rate in his body...
All the actors are on a road of the non-existent "County of Meduville", but in a first time I was thinking to use an italian policeman that I made few months ago and that was ready to act in my scene.
But I read carefully the rules of the challenge and I realized that I can't use that model because one of the aim of the "Spectacular Challenge" is to push everyone of us to made something totally new. It was really great! Difficult, tiryng but great!
I had the opportunity to test my ability to build a 3D illustration with all new characters and props in less than two months; Really a great challenge! So I started sketching and modeling all the "actors" and props almost at the same time, because the hurry of the deadline; So I did for the rigging, IK and textures, all at the same time and in the last weeks I started to make some render test. Unluchily I have not enough ram, so I made the final rendering in a not so high resolution (just 1800x2732). I made separate rendering of the different elements, output in .tga files and composed in PS. I made some manipulation on the layers and I added some effects with my pen tablet (the smoke under the spaceship and its volumetric lights).
Thanks to the advices of all my fellows of the "Spectacular Challenge" I fixed some of the bugs inside the very first version of my illustration and I finished it in time. I think there is a lot of work to do on this piece, but no more time to do it. Anyway I'm quite satisfied of the final result. I'm going to use the characters I made for this challenge in other works and maye in an animation. It was very important to me looking at the works of the other fellows; It was (and it is) so inspiring to me and every day that I look at theyr pieces of art I always learn a lot of new things very important for my work.
