View Full Version : Adding thorns to cactus

Hi,

I am modeling a cactus, and I was hoping I could use paint effects to quickly add thorns to it. (I know paint effects can create an entire cactus, but I want a particular look)

I watched a basic tutorial video, and read through some maya help pages, but so far I have no clue.

I thought it would be a simple thing to have it "grow" some simple thin cones, but apparently it's not that easy.

Can anyone give me some direction for paint effects, or suggest some other quick way to place hundreds of tiny pieces of geometry onto my cactus?

If you are using 3ds max I would add the thorns at modelling stage like this.

Create a basic cone (as low poly as you can) and use the scatter modifier to distribute the cone across you cactus.

I have just used this method myself for a cactus and it works really well.
