i know that sofk ik is a simulation, but ....

when i keyframe the arm and hand it plays back with the hand in a dfferent position, but when i go to correct it, it pops back to the position i want it, but still pays back wrong. is there some trick or step i'm missing. the ik strength for the arm is 90%

Howdy,

Well, Soft IK is a dynamic IK solution and it really isn't the best thing to use for arms and legs. It is constantly recalculating the bones' positions according to dynamic forces. Increasing your Goal strength can help, but I think you're better off using hard IK for arms and legs.

then what do you use soft ik for on a character? ear? floppy ones or anteni?

worms, tenticles....

Howdy,

Yeah, stuff like that, that needs secondary dynamic motion.

are there any tips as far as using soft ik with IKtools? things to watch out for or make sure something is set-up right before using.

Yes, actually there is only one thing to watch out for. It works best when a Soft IK chain comes after a Hard IK chain. It doesn't seem to work as well if a Hard IK chain comes after a Soft IK chain. The Soft IK chain, because of its dynamic behavior, is too unpredictable for the following Hard IK chain to be effective.

so for using a soft ik chain after Spinal for a jiggly butt or belly then. or after a rotator in the head for ears/ anteni.

thanks CD

how are those tuts coming along?

i'm slowly working on one called "the deconstuction of IKBOB" to learn how you set him up. one i can find a free screenshot util i can put it together. i will, of course, have you view it before releasing to the masses.

Howdy,

"The deconstuction of IKBOB"? Sounds cool.

Actually, I just finished recreating IKBob as a low poly single mesh for the tuts:

And gave him a face lift, too, complete with eyes and mouth inside:

Are you working right now on the tutorial of CDIKtools?
That would be great.
