When it comes to video-game controllers, Nintendo has always been an innovator. Back when Atari and its one-button joystick ruled, Nintendo devised a two-button controller with a directional thumb pad. Then came action-sensitive vibration, wireless connectivity and an analog stick for 360˚ steering. Now the company hopes to shake things up with a wireless controller for next year's Revolution console that will allow players to apply real-world physical experience to games. The one-handed grip has motion and position sensors, so if you're playing a Ping-Pong game, you just flick the controller like a paddle. Or, to shoot, take aim and tap a button. For more elaborate games, a second piece with analog stick and two triggers (for that extra itchy finger) can be connected.

1) It's still ugly (IMHO)
2) Get rid of the wire between the two devices.

the wire doesn't bother me too much. it's not like you need that thing to play games on the system. it's an accessory.

The reason why it's there is so that they don't have to put batteries and transmitters into every add on peripheral they make.

It's good to hear that the analog controller (left, in the picture) has a couple buttons on it. From the looks of the 'remote' design, not many of those buttons are going to be easily/comfortably accessible with one hand. It'd still be nice if they changed the design of the remote taking that into consideration...but having buttons on the left controller does at least -help- the situation.

I think most of the new console controllers have looked like crap this year for some reason. Maybe it's just me, but I think those PS3 controllers look like a joke.

Look at the next page on that article.
Immediately after saying that the Revolution will blow my mind, they say that frozen fish nuggets will also blow my mind.
And then on the next page, a cell phone with a built-in speaker will blow my mind.

But you have to admit, the Xbox360’s Controller is a thing of beauty…

Yeah! And it works with your PC via USB cable.

I wish they would have switched places on the d-pad/left analog stick for the 360 controller.
PS3 controller looks very comfortable to me. Rev controller looks fun.

As long as it handles well, who cares what it looks like?

I dunno man, being able to fry fish without fat getting in it, and being able to download mp3s onto your cellphone from anywhere... blows my mind =)

I have total faith in Nintendo, it looks like alot of fun. Sony one is a prototype ya know...and untill I can hold it in my hands I can't say anything. Don't get me started on Xbox 360 though : *yaaawwn*. I'm really glad Nintendo is trying something new =)
Actually there's alot of new sources out there discussing the Rev. controller. The wire is an accessory like another poster already said. There is also a built-in ability for all game devs to customize the controller to fit their particular game. So while it may look odd, remember that the N64 was the first game machine with the analog stick that functioned properly and look what that did for console gaming. I highly doubt Nintendo will ever mess up on a home console.

It's okay. But the Rev controller has two niceties that are hard to overlook: 1.) It'll be friendlier to a broader range of hand sizes (something I have to ding both Nintendo and Sony for in the past...) and 2.) The motion sensing features. This one's important to me since I've yet to play a console FPS and really feel like I'm in control of it.

Please tell how how tilting your right hand about 10degrees (or less depending how far away from the tv you are) will make you feel like you're in control :)

You should read up on the Rev. controller. There is motion sensor technology in the "remote" controller. This in turn allows you to make characters jump by flinging the "remote" up. There are other examples, but that was what I thought of. The motion ability of the controller isn't limited to just slow movements.

Certainly. With the FPS games I've played on various consoles, most of the shots I actually managed to pull off felt like they were allowed by fate. (or imagine playing Wheel of Fortune with half the slices of the wheel set to BANKRUPT) With the Rev controller, as reporters have pointed out, they aimed and hit what they were aiming at. I got a taste of this with the DS. I played a demo of Metroid Hunters and found it was actually quite easy to aim in it compared to San Andreas, which I had been playing quite routinely at the time.
Sadly, the analog thumb stick is an awful FPS interface.

I was obviously talking about aiming...
Also, holding a small ball i your left hand doesn't give much stability.
FPS was never meant to be played without keyboard and mouse, just as platform wasn't meant to be played on a keyboard, simple :) (and before you bring up 007 and Halo, I didn't say it doesn't work).
I'd like to hear from people who've played for 2 or more hours straight with a real game (oh yeah, there aren't any) with the setup, not someone who tested a demo game for 5min, it's quite different.

FPS was meant to be played with a gun. Heh.

Well, I think is good. All these things will make us slimmer. hehehe
Serious!!! One of the things I hate when playing videogames is that even when you have a lot of action on the screen you are sitting on a sofa doing nothing like a fat amoeba.

Look at page 5, IBM's automatic bidirectional speach recognition - they talk in there language it hears the sounds and converts it audibly into your language and vise versa!!

a tad off topic... but this is the list of 5 new "thing" that will "blow our minds"
1) more fuel efficient jets
2) revolution
3) less fat
4) downloading songs to your phone
5) a translator
....
bravo time magazine.
these 5 things will sure blow our minds... for 3 seconds.
or until revolution 2 comes out and artist start recording music on their cell phones.
1) 2) Get rid of the wire between the two devices.
why? then you wouldn't be able to use it as nunchucks.
