View Full Version : HELP! on modelling a low poly 'flail' (medevil weapon)

Hi, im a newbie max modeller and have an oppurtunity with a games company and have 4 days to create 4 models, the only thing is a dont know much about low poly.

the brief is:

Weapon - Not a sword or an axe or something similarly obvious, use your imagination. (200 polygons max.)
i am trying to model a flail which looks like this:

how best shall i model this? i know the basic modeling. someone told me about soft/hard normals but ive no clue! what do it do?!

Haha... Wait a game company is giving you a chance, allthough you have no clue how to model anthing. Something doesn't seem right. Doesn't make to much sence if this is actually true don't bother cause their gana know you can't model eventually.

well i was over exaggerating, i can model just havent done low polly before, the company saw my website http://www.paulheathcote.com and was very impressed with what i do

how i max do i make this hard/soft normals to smooth that without changing 190 polys?

yes i know it was ment to be a flail in the first place but then i realised i couldnt make it with a chain less than 200 polys so i made it into a mace with a stick

thats 198! any ideas on how i can make it smoother in max without going over 200 polys?!?!

cant see you gettign much more out of the like 2 polys you got left...

texturing is the key to beleivablity. Or tho looking at the screen shot of the game..doesnt matter.

Given that description I would have modelled a pair of chopsticks. ;)

I think your mace looks ok. Although some of the spikes seem to be at odd angles.
