I have been working on my Yoda model for about 6 months now and have moved to the animation stage. Please critique this first test. What do you think of his facial expressions, voice, and general believability? The next test will include body animation as well.

the model looks awsome. but the animation needs alot of work. when his forehead goes down so should his eye lids, because it would convay it more in the animation. there needs to be less wide strecthed movements with his mouth and more of a hand puppet look. if you watch all the starwars except episode 1 then you will see that its a puppet look not a human look to the mouth. and it works because it flows nicely. there also needs to be a little breathing motion to him, because he is old there has to be subtle up and down motions. but other then those things lol its pretty good. just needs more work.

This Yoda you made kooks more than the Yoda in the old
Star wars films... Like the pupet...
And this is why i like your animation
It isnīt like the new animations from ILM...
It looks really like the old pupet used in the
first three movies!

Great work... I like it!

Thanks for the comments. I agree with you for the most part nofxsapunk. Definately with the forhead and eyebrows and good point about the breathing motion. The mouth, however, I am trying to understand exactly what you mean. I feel like this was in between the originals and episodes 2 and 3. There are only 4 mouth positions there, and I tried to do most of them kind of puppet like. There isn't much more than a frown, a pursed lips, and mouth open and mouth closed. Maybe I didn't do a good enough job conveying that, and I'll try to work on it some more. But maybe some specifics that you don't like would be helpful.

Thanks framestorm. That was definately what I was going for. I was trying very hard to stay away from Episode II and III references, and modeling and getting motion reference straight from the originals.

Look for an update pretty soon. (Maybe a week or so).

My only crit, aside from what the others have mentioned, is the ear's need to move as he speaks.

the lip sync is perfect if you're trying to make it look like the puppet (which is what you want). However, the head bobbing does not look like the puppet at all. If you watch the films you notice that as his head moves, it slowly jitters because of the puppeteer's hand straining in the muscles. The head needs to move roughly, but yet not linear

Well, here's another quick test. This time with cloth simulation. I think it turned out allright, but it still needs some tweaks. Tell me what you think.

its okey. arm is intersecting, cloth seems a little to light and faceted, seem to notice some "sharpness" errors. I think it can be fixed easily

I have finally done more animation tests, in the little bit of free time I've had recently. I'm trying to get realistic movement, behaviors and emotions. So without further adeu, here is my first test, and will hopefully be the first of many to come in the near future.

This first one is the default 3d scene output (just in program graphics, not really rendered) but it is a heck of a lot faster than actually rendering it, and it still gives you a good idea of the emotion and everything I've been working on. Please critique what you like and don't like about the way he moves.

This one is a 2 second render of the first part of the one above, however the first one is more recent in terms of his motion. Anyway, I have to find a way to cut render times down. Right now it is 30 minutes per frame to render (with motion blur), and that's just too long. (Just this short clip took a day and a half.) But I would appreciate comments on the lighting and the way he looks on this one, and look at the first one for his motion.

All comments and criticisms are very appreciated. :D

This is looking pretty cool! Some nice subtleties in his expressions. The first thing that jumped out at me about the animation was his head needs arcs when they turn. Right now it turns linearly which makes it look un-natural. You have the blinks during the turns which is good - I would make his head dip down halfway through each to give it an arc. I think you could exaggerate the expression right before and when he suddenly turns more to make it read better.

I don't know anything about cloth sims or how they work, but it looks like its made of rubber or jello or something.
Good job with this - the model looks awesome!
