View Full Version : World´s first real HDR monitor
daart 10-18-2005, 07:56 PM With increasing popularity of HDR in CG and games, time has come for a new technical solution, capable to show the vast varity scale of light nuances, that a HDR image provides.
There is a pretty nice review of the worlds first HDR display on bit-tech. A must for all compositors, gamers and cg freaks

I was wondering, do they sell this monitor with a free sun lotion or what? I'm sure hardcore gamers will get a nice tan from it. :D

That's actually pretty amazing. I think this picture says it all.

The screen on the left is an ordinary LCD, you can see how poorly it deals with high dynamic range - washing out all of the black making it gray in order to properly render the highlights. The one on the right has blacks that are totally black and whites that can "almost hurt your eyes" as it says in the article. No camera can capture what the HDR display's image really looks like becaues the highlights get blown out, but I think this video gives a pretty good idea:

Now that they have LCD displays with 200,000:1 contrast ratios someone needs to start seriously advancing the dynamic range of camera systems
The NEC Spectra View LCD uses basicaly the same technique for color proofing.

not really no,...the dynamic range of the NEC isn't anywhere near this, although it samples a 10 bit range to provide more range of colours beyond the normal sRGB gamut the NEC and LCD's like it dont even have the dynamic range of a good CRT like a Barco.
This is like the difference between looking at a print and looking at a slide.

I am sure this HDR ability is good but the examples video is crap. You can't just turn the brightness up and claim taht the monitor cannot handle the bright lights. I am really not sure what this can add expect the ability to hurt your eyes a whole lot more. Personally, I'd prefer going beyond 32 bit color over this as I don't find any problems with the way minitors handle bright lights atm.

I think you need to see it to understand... everyone I've spoken to who's seen these things at Siggraph over the years says they're incredible.

In the article it says they tweaked the oridnary LCDs brightness throughout the video - by the end the brightness was turned way down but the blacks still looked gray and they said the highlights looked dull and flat to the eye.

Perhpas I do need to see it. Hopefully soon as I am always open to new technology.
