Hi,
Xpresso and COFFEE are two completely different things. One did not depend on the other.
Please have a look here :
Postforum Thread (http://www.postforum.com/forums/read.php?f=6&i=62582&t=62502)
for some differences.

Is the Coffee's role in C4D just like that of MEL in Maya?

Maybe almost yes. We can make plugins with COFFEE, what about MEL?

A big difference between COFFEE and XPresso is data type. COFFEE doesn't mind data type such as integer and vector, but XPresso does. So XPresso is not an editor of COFFEE expression but that of, so to speak, C++ expression. :)
