Hi,

I am having trouble with fog, when i try to use the fog and render, my object turns the fog color and the bg stays the same. Is there a way to actually make it work like fog instead of just coloring the object?

Set the fog color to use background colour, and then set the the background colour to the color you want stuff to fade to.

You probably want a swirling ground fog effect, right? You need to use the Ground Fog tool, rather than just the backdrop fog in that case... It's in the Fog menu on the Scene tab.

Good luck,

Ben

I don't use Groundfog in either form, it's next to impossible to control precisely. I learned about ground fogs using Steamer on 5.x, and I miss that control...

A better option for "ground mist" types of fog, especially textured ones, that I just tested out is to use a spread of points at ground level, and use HyperVoxel Sprite mode with 3 or more slices. I used that to get a humid, ground steam effect in a rainy-alley shot I did for my reel recently.

My reel selection (http://www.altyna.com/portfolio/animations.shtml) It's in Demo Reel 3.9, after my corporate logo animation. You'll need Divx for viewing.

For the original question, as mentioned, if it's just a general fog you want, use Background Fog coloring. In one of those occasions where that's not an option, tweak the Fog Color to match up at best you can.

CourtJester, that's some really nice work.

Another way to do ground fog is to create a ground plane or object, apply fractal noise as transparency using world coordinates. Vibrate the plane very fast. Clone in additional planes as needed until it looks good. Ive used this before and it works great and typically will render fast. Turn on motion blur too.

Thanks Steve:blush:, although IMO some of the stuff I see from the young fellers around here puts it to shame.

I'm still busting my butt trying to do better stuff. I let myself get complacent over the last two years and then found myself on the job market with a reel that might have been decent in 1999 (looooooong story).

SplineGod: I remember finding out about that trick, a few months after I'd acquired and learned Steamer. One of my worst "Why didn't I think of that!" moments. Where I did use that effect was with moving polygon explosions; fireballs would engulf objects without the sharp edge.

There's also my physically-accurate DOF thing.
DOF reflections (http://www.altyna.com/lw/DOFreflections.html)

Motion blur is uber-useful in out-of-the-box ways.
