Select your Object you want to mirror.

Hit insert to change the pivert point.

Move the pivort point to the side of your object (the side closest to were the mirrored side is going to be)

Go to Edit>Duplicate option box

make the X Transale Value -1 Hit apply!

If you want to move a vertex on your orginal object and want it to apply to your mirrored side click in Intence Option i think its what its called sorry dont have maya open in front of me.

First make sure that the pivot of your object is aligned with the edge where the mirroring will occur. Then press Shit + D to duplicate it and type -1 in the appropriate scale field in the channel box. Then use the attach command to attach the 2 pieces.

edit: I didn't see the previous post when I posted which sugests another way of doing the same thing. However about the instancing - the reflection option of the move tool in Maya 7 made the use of instancing for the perpose of modeling simetrical objects, thing of the past and now you no longer have to be bothered with a sharp edge in the middle while you model

i don't have maya in front of me...so wondering...one of you said to trans x-1, the other

scale()-1,...so does it depend on what your geometry is?

It depends how your object is oriented and in what direction you want to mirror, if in doubt, first, as I said earlier, Shift + d to duplicate the object then select the object with the scale tool and refer to the scale manipulator - it is always oriented along the object local axes and those are the axes along which the mirroring will occur. You can simply start dragging one of the boxes of the scale manipulator in the opposite direction until it says -1 in the channel box, or once you see which value in the channel box is changing during the drag, just type -1 in there.

Also, there’s a big difference between the Mirror Command in the poly menu and mirroring by negative scaling. The poly Mirror Command mirror only along the world axes around the bounding box of the object. So to make this command work properly you have to always align the mirroring edge to a world axis.

thanks for explaining this...makes more sense to me now!
