View Full Version : old dude
gigan 10-16-2005, 01:56 AM modeled & rendered in xsi, sculpted (not finished) & painted (not finished) in zbrush. i painted the diffuse in zbrush because i'm using a really old version of photoshop and none of the brushes i have work. i also messed up the uvs, so i'll have to do the rest of the maps in zbrush also... so yeah.

i imported the level 4 mesh into xsi... there's no bump or specular maps yet. curves & colours were adjusted in photoshop because i haven't properly lit it yet... and i'm still using the diffusion shader. how outdated can i get?

i never had an idea for this to begin with, and i'm still not sure where i want to go with it. anyone have any ideas? i've just been winging it as i go along. i don't really recommend doing that.
critiques and suggestions would obviously be appreciated. heh.

Very realistic looking. The one thing that really bothers me is the corners of the mouth- something looks not quite right on the corners where the lips meet. Perhaps it needs to be more defined. The problem is more noticable on the colored render. Your topology doesn't seem to quite be radiating from the mouth either, might be part of the issue.

This is great!! ... as for your requested critic ... well, besides the mouth corner its hard to say ... I realy like this ... ok lighting is an issue for me ... I know you like the high contrast light and they give off an interesting mood but maybe you should try for something that doesn't hide your model behind shadows so much. Even then ... its still cool ... only thing I could think of right now. Spy, general, captain, professor ... what shall it be? ... I hope we will see!

Really great- Maybe he could be more aged- wrinkles- but I am amazed. I like the mouth- in paticular, I love the fact its asymetrical.

here's a texture update... almost finished. i'm going to tone down the forehead a lot though.

here's a quick colour adjustment with some sketchover hair... not too sure.

thanks for the comments... i've been trying to fix the corner of the mouth for awhile now... you can't really tell from the new renders though, but i agree it looks really funny so i'm going to continue working around there. when (if) i get around to doing the bump map i will be adding more wrinkles. thanks again...... :)

Its too real! jking, I think if I was to even try to critique something, its hes missing his body but then again, the heads perfect I think. The only thing u could possibly push is the dome cap that people have on the top part of there skulls, then again not every1 has this specific feature. Great work

Damn that looks good. Very moody and picturesque. I think your model looks great as it is, i have no crits. I personally like the short hair version one better.
Your model strikes a very similiar appearance to Antropus' recent old man model. Are you guys using the same reference?
Looks great! Very realistic and has lots of character!
I think his neck is a little too wide.
Keep it up!

hey herman great work!
something that always stood out to me about your work (and demo)
was how you lit your characters, alot of the mental ray xsi renders seem so similar to me in lighting but you seem to get a different more cinematic and dramatic result with your renders, how exactly are you lighting this? also can you show me your rendertree i am really curious,
awesome work man.

This is fabulous work, I also have the same questions as heber: how you lit your characters, alot of the mental ray xsi renders seem so similar to me in lighting but you seem to get a different more cinematic and dramatic result with your renders, how exactly are you lighting this? also can you show me your rendertree i am really curious,
It'd be very interested to hear more about how you do it, thanks for your time  :buttrock:

minor update... made his neck smaller and shaped out the top of his head more, but i think he may look a bit squished in y. i'll start detailing it soon i guess... and then model some clothes and maybe glasses.
http://student.vfs.com/~3d51herman/015967/11.jpg
here's my render tree. it's lit with 2 area lights (in the initial images there was just 1). anyways for some reason i can't ever seem to get all the full colours from my maps to show up in the raw render (with or without diffusion), but the colour information is there so i can easily adjust it in afx.
http://student.vfs.com/~3d51herman/015967/10.gif
i really don't see a resemblance to antropus' head, but if you do then i guess there is one. ... & i am not using his model for reference.
thanks for the comments.

Lookin sweet man!
I really like the short white hair version. I think a bit more hair on top, like the second to last update, is my fav. I picture this guy in a woolen turtleneck sweater or a tourist/tropical flower shirt for some reason..

great work.. I agree.. the short white hair is my fav.
he looks so Junior Soprano (HBO series) A set of old Kissinger glasses would finish him off!.
Congrats.

great work so far!
In some renders he looks a little like bill murray. perhaps it's due to the lighting. :D
keep up the awesome work! looking forward to further updates.

i originally wanted to give him kissinger glasses... well i quickly made some mastroianni types instead. i probably won't keep them though. he's starting to look a bit generic so i will be re-working the proportions a bit. the top of the hair is from a photo. i don't think i ever liked the short hair version, so i will probably give him something like this. :)

I have no words..it's great, now try another kind of lighting,to show the face better and loose less detail!

something which is worth trying that seems to make my diffusion tests look better is take the greyscale of your bump, invert it and plug it into the textured scattering of the diffusion shader. basicly what this does is increase the scattering in areas of depression on the skin. it may control it too much, but it seems to work ok for me.

really outstanding!
Nose and eyes are awesome. He looks like Malcom MacDowell in Evilenko, do you know that movie?

No! He looks like Dennis Hopper!

man you have done a really fantastic work!!
I love your render tree ! did you use the XSI 4.2 version? The diffusion node doesn't work with the 5.0 .
congrats and keep it up !

dude, bad ass model dude, seriously bad ass!! awesome model, texture and lioghting!
cmoon herman, dont be lazy and keep updating!
Damnit Herman, get a job, seriosusly... you DESERVE IT.
This is looking awesome man, didnt know you were working on something new.
Judging from the first pictures (the more recent udpated turn-around is kinda small and hard to tell) something about the 3/4 is looking a bit blocky still, needs a bit more work on the silo, around the cheek bone and jowls, really minor, but the front view is fawesome.
Thanks for that render tree man, your handle on skin in XSI is top notch, I wub you. :3

ok my guy is going through a bit of an identity crisis... here's my latest update, i think the lighting and colour might be final. i don't think it's too dark... and it's very close to how i wanted it to look.
http://student.vfs.com/~3d51herman/015967/26.jpg
i did use a substantial amount of dennis hopper reference material at one point for certain areas but i don't see any resemblance. i've also used ben kingsley and ingmar bergman as reference... and i still can't decide what i want this guy to look like. that's how efficient i am.
the proportions are really messed up, it's a really long story but i can't fix them. i still need to detail it of course. i think i'm going to skip the bump map though. uhm, the eye area really bothers me so i'm going to fix that. and i hate the nose.
thanks formoso i will try that. i'm using diffusion in 4.2. i think i've got a video card issue with the jade/skim_milk shaders so i can't use those. and i modeled the base mesh with edge extrusion. there's a wireframe on page 1.
dave i will send you something tomorrow. and herbert... you know the only reason i'm even working on this still is because i'm too lazy to start on something new. and anyways he doesn't look very old anymore.
thanks for looking...
