Taking a break from my many unfinished projects I decided to start to work on some character modeling, a nice change of pace after months of doing nothing but scenery.

This is Hugh, an inventor that lives in the house seen in my Cartoonish Architecture (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=251118&page=4) posts with three robots of his own design (who are next on my list of characters to make).

I am having some trouble coming up with a way to do cartoon hair so any ideas on that would be great.

I like it so far.

Especially the detail in the bunched up cloth around his arms.

The ears look kinda flat as of now.

Hair- I think a character like this would benefit more from "clumps" of geometry in the shape of the hair, instead of going for showing every strand.

Nice work so far!

I agree about the ears, I still have to go back and work on those. I also think that modeled hair would fit better than using a hair simulator, it would look odd on the character. I've actually been going back and looking at some of AndyH's characters, mostly Bunny Girl and Office Girl for some ideas.

Made some updates to the model, hair is the next step but so far just some general updates. The coat still needs a lot of detail added to it but I opted for it over just the shirt because he was starting to look more like a constuction worker than an inventor.

I like the over all look and fell of the character. Good design and good modeling. The only problems that I can see are in the ears, nose and hands. The hands look like they concave, and hands don't concave, unless you're going for that, but if you are, then the rest of the model needs to look less human. The ears need a little more detail, even for a cartoony character. The nose looks a little too narrow. But some of these may be asthetic choices. Otherwise good job.

Thanks for the reply! You were quite right about the hands, once you pointed them out I noticed that they were oriented completely wrong on the arms. I think I fixed them, though some tweaking might still be in order. I agree about the ears as well, but I typically leave those until last as I find ears to be the hardest part to model. The nose also needs more detail which I think I shall add in after I finish the hair.

Amongst other things I made his head and hands bigger to make him look both more cartoony and younger.

I like it. Especially the design and style. Something you could play with is maybe try making the eyes a little bigger for more of an expressive look (just for fun really, I think your model looks fine).
