niEt0 10-15-2005, 10:47 AM Hi there,
I beem working in this animation for a few days, and I would like to know what do you think about it, now I'm more worried about acting than other things.

Thanks in advance.

Having just looked at it again i would say the hand acting needs work,it looks quite stiff,as if the character has claws rather than hands.

It's true, hands (and arms) really need better poses and breakdowns as well, so.. that is my first new task!
I'll post an update ASAP.
Musashidan, thanks a bunch!!

haha, funny animation. It's probably not a big problem, but in the beginning he seems to react to the button with a lot of confidence. Maybe that's what you were going for though, I have no problem with it, but I did pick it out the first time i saw it; seemed weird but kind of funny. The rest I can't critique. Keep it up:thumbsup: .

The acting is great !
I like the simple character too, looks like something I might be able to construct in 3dsMax ver 1.2 :)
Storywise, it might make more sense if he examines the package right off the bat, like he does *after* the table disappears. But that is assuming that the button is supposed to be dangerous, which btw, there is no real indication of.
This clip would be a great example for an "animator's 101" class, there is a great mix of physical and emotional animation in it !

nice work. the animation is perfect, i like how you can tell he is thinking and everything. A+ work. but the hands doo seem stiff though. is this guy rigged at all or is he just cubes? :bounce:

i don´t think it´s rigged, it seems like the CAT to me...

I like the animation it looks really good.:thumbsup:
My critiques on the acting would be. Where is he sitting? Why does he not look at the direction of where the box came from longer? I think you should texture the movement and reactions. Everything seems like there moving on beats of ones.
These are only my opinion they do not reflect the opinion on any other UNITS. :)

Yes it is CAT, but it have already a character:

Still working in the animation .. it's about 1500 frames, hans still need more rigging work, but the important thing is the animation.
Tomorrow I'll put an update of it, I think...

This is really cool man! :buttrock: I really like it. You have learned a lot!!
I can't wait to see it with that new character that you are doing, It would be even more expresive. If you set up some facial expresions you would be able to improve more your acting. I'm sure you will! :)
THIS IS COOL NIETO!

Hi man!!!
It´s really nice animation :bounce: ...The idea is amazing!!! The only thing is that maybe will be better if you exaggerate the poses in some parts of the animation like style cartoon mainly in the end of the animation more sq/st more cartoon timing I think in my opinion it will be great for the animation.
And another thing It´s when the guy is running outside, I think that this cycle is too much "realistic" maybe with more personality will be better o maybe you can change this run for a simple "scared pose" but is up to you of course :) .
But Nieto this animation is f···ing great!!! well done.
Y tio, postea ya el update!!!

haha great animation, maybe at the beginnig when he gets scared cos of the box, there is something bothering me there but i´d know what...it seems a bit strange...i´d try to fix that, and then, the character, i´d change it for a HUUUGE TROLL with some zbrush in it, and instead of a box, he gets an axe, and u´d use displacements, and gi, and and.. :D

Hey tuuu!!! Here are some critics.
First of all, the character is frozen in the beginning. Until the box appears, he doesn't move at all. Move it, make something with him. A character frozen is a dead character.:)
Second... after the "frozen" pose, he just rotate the head to see the box with no aparent reason. You need to change the attitude in the guy, for example. Imagine that in the begining, he is just like singing a song in his head, and he is moving a little bit his knees and taping the table with his right hand, and moving a bit the head like bouncing. And then, the box appears, he keep moving the head in that direction, and casualy, he sees the box.... (not inmediatly after the box stop)
....and sudenly, he make that overtake (now is too quick, that's because Metamesh see something weird in there). You have to use the overtake as a quick transition between the two "states", and end the character in to a surprised attitude (you have to make longer yours, to give him time to think about the box).
You have to "build" the situation more slowly and giving us hints of what he's thinking... like. The guy is bored... then the box appears... and now he is really surprised, and then he think about what to do, and then he decide to have a closer look....
...Yours, right now is more like this... frozen guy.... box.... sudden overtake... 15 frames of thinking.... take box.... ....there is not much of a thinking there, if you know what i mean.
You know what the guy is thinking... but the spectator needs more time to "feel" the situation... and to understand the character.
... puff... well, that's all from now!
BUT I LIKE IT EHHH!!?? ... I didn't say the opposite! :scream:

10-25-2005, 06:47 PM
yep that is what i wanted to say but cos my limitation with english i wasn´t able to say, but i was aware of all that stuff and frozen characters..ehem..and things...ehem...

10-26-2005, 02:38 PM
Many thanks for those tips!... I´ll try to avoid that freeze pose and inpruve acting in that part as well. :bounce:
Don´t know about a troll in these scene, doesn´t fit in this little chair!!
...but pass me the troll (better if is rigged) and we can give him some live, for sure!
ok.. back to animating ... update soon!

I only looked at the latest version and it looks really great.
My critique would mainly be on the model itself. I like the simplicity of the character overall but the hands really bother me as they are clearly just boxes extruded from a box and smoothed. The evenness of the knuckles is a peeve of mine in 3d. Moving the starting knuckle of the middle finger out a little might help. Also, if the part between the first two fingers wasn't as deep as that between the second and third it might look better. That's how Disney does Mickey's fingers but that might deform weird. I also think that parts between the fingers should be "V" shaped, not "l_l" shaped like you have them now.
Besides that, adding some shape to the fingers by either tapering the finger down toward the tips for a more realistic look, or bulging/rounding out the last knuckle of each finger for a more cartoony look.
As it is right now I found the hand modeling pretty distracting, especially when everything else is so nice.
Animation wise:
When the right hand is resting on the box while he's looking around, it's dead. The fingertips should stay fixed on the box but the hands and fingers should move a little. Can you animate pivots in CAT?
On the animation of the hands, it's good but I get the impression that his default, relaxed finger position is with them straight when they should be slightly bent unless actively clenching, grabbing or otherwise tensing the fingers' tendons.
Minor nitpicks though. This is really well done! Nice work.

Hey all. I have some bad news to bring. I'm going to have to abandon ship. I've recently had my portable hard drive stolen which contained a majority of my work for my demo reel class. I've put out flyers around campus but I don't think I'll get it back and I need to work double time to get back to the point I was at before.
What's even worse is that my GBS animation was on that drive as well. I have a blocked version on my home computer but it was with the old rig.
Really sorry to be doing this but I've absolutely got to get my demo files up to par or else graduation will be put off for me.

I like the concept - it's a funny idea. As far as the animation, a few things really stood out to me and detracted from the realism. In the early parts of the film - when the character is side-stepping around the chair, the hips and root seems to move in a very linear fashion. There doesn't appear to be any weight transfer from one leg to the other. I guess this applies throughout the whole film actually. I'd start with the root and loosen up the movement there before doing anything else. It seems to me like he needs to have a little more up and down when he is stepping around (especially for this quasi-cartoony feel). Next, get those hips moving more. Hope this helps some...

Hi Animonster, it´s true , it need more up and down, I can see it now clearly, before I knew that there is something, like is "floating" a bit... so have to be that. I´ll try to fix that.
Thanks a bunch! :)
