View Full Version : RUMOR: Disney close to renegotiating deal with Pixar? (JHM): MOD EDIT
Dreckins 10-14-2005, 08:07 AM There is an interesting article at JimHillMedia.com (triggered by Mr. Iger's recent comment at Apple's Special Event no doubt) that goes into some detail (speculation) on the terms surrounding future/on-going negotiations between Pixar and Disney.

Could just be banter :hmm: but I always find his site to be thought provoking. Enjoy!

"A confused hush fell over San Jose's California theater yesterday after Disney's new CEO said (http://www.nytimes.com/2005/10/13/technology/13apple.html):
"It's great to be here to announce an extension of our relation with Apple (http://www.apple.com/) ..."
This room full of reporters -- who were there to attend what they thought would be just the unveiling of the latest version of the iPod -- quickly began murmuring among themselves. "Did he say what I think he just said?"
Sensing some confusion, Bob Iger quickly clarified his remarks. "Not Pixar (http://www.pixar.com/), but with Apple." Then -- almost as a comic aside -- Disney's new Big Cheese said "Maybe someday soon ..."
And then -- after Iger dropped this anvil-sized hint -- word flew around the entertainment industry that the Walt Disney Company was getting very close to closing a new deal with Pixar Animation Studios."

It's not like Pixar didn't try to get a deal with others. I would guess that they asked for WAY too much money. Why else wouldn't a deal have taken place?
At that level, it all comes down to money.

Well, what other place would they go to that would have the marketing power of Disney to promote kids movies (WB screwed up Iron Giant and I doubt Brad Bird would like that)? Perhaps they knew that Eisner wasn't going to be around for long and they wanted to wait it out?

It's exactly like that ~ Pixar has been playing hard~to~get. Lots of other companies clearly want them, and it's not as if a studio that can release a Harry Potter film couldn't do promotion for a Pixar film as well ~ I think it's more about wanting to see which people they'd be working with.
The thing is, Disney & Pixar will be working together for hundreds of years just with the co~owned movies and characters from the first 6 films. If Pixar made a new deal with anyone other than Disney, they'd have to be working with two studios at once. Getting back together just makes sense for both of them.

They're worried that -- if "Chicken Little" rolled into theaters on November 4th and winds up under-performing ... Well, that then puts Pixar in an almost impossibly strong position. In effect making it possible for Steve Jobs to ask anything of Iger. Up to and including surrendering sequel rights to earlier Disney/Pixar co-productions. Maybe even asking that the ownership of certain titles (EX: "The Incredibles (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00005JN4W/002-5340999-3372839?v=glance&n=130&s=dvd&v=glance)") be turned back over to Pixar.
That's a lot of pressure to put on one movie. I think Chicken Little will do well, but maybe isn't the strongest of the new Disney line~up (I'm looking forward more to Rapunzel.) I guess it's true what they say "You're only as good as your last picture."

Actually, that's what I'm getting at. WB has good Cartoon Network marketing, but how awkward would it be if Pixar went with them? That's the only other solution I see at this point. Fox has Blue Sky, and any of the others don't have the marketing power of the big three (WB, Disney, Fox). Paramount? Maybe, but I doubt Pixar wants to be equated to Jimmy Neutron from the public.
